Oh snap, I didn't know how many storylines this race has: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/10/nyregion/hiram-monserrate-moya-city-council-primary.html

[I typed up some commentary here, but decided against it as to not spark a political debate. Leaving in the article though, as it's a good starting point for anyone needing more info about the race.]

Was just going to post this article too. As it is, I would be emotionally wrapped up in not letting a POS like Monserrate win, but now it might impact the stadium too????

Interesting that this City Council seat covers Citi Field. It doesn't cover the 800 feet though on the eastern side of the Whitestone. That is Peter Koo and the 20th District

The club is openly supporting a local politician with whom they presumably have some sort of understanding.

I actually undersold this. For those who don't know, this city council district includes portions of Willets point and city council members have huge sway in determining the shape of developments in their district.

Montserrate, Moya's opponent, has specifically opposed a soccer stadium at the site.

I was going to ask this question. This happens sometimes on the Federal level. A locally elected official may recommend a US Attorney or Judge for the district or state they are in and those folks usually get appointed or confirmed. It sounds like there is something similar here in regards to the sway a City Councilman may have over his or her district

When the City Charter was rewritten in 1989 to delete the old Board of Estimate, it gave the City Council veto power over zoning changes and other big land use projects. As a result, the Council has developed a tradition of deferring to the member that represents the district where the project or rezoning will go - if they don't support it, it won't go anywhere. This has been playing out in Brooklyn over the last nine months or so, and is THE hot button issue in the primary race for the Fort Greene/Crown Heights-area Council seat race. So if the next Councilman for the area is gung ho for a stadium, the rezoning will get done.*

*Granted, there's also the thorny state issues involved too which we discussed a few pages ago IIRC.

Yeah this seems like a big deal for both the stadium and my faith in humanity.

Image wasn't showing right for me, so here is the quote from the tweet.

"We have multiple sites right now, that are under active consideration and that we're in various stages of negotiation. Some involve public processes, some are private, and it's I think going as well and we're as far along in terms of progress, as we've been, certainly since I've been here over the last 18 months." - NYCFC President Jon Patricof on Soccer in the City Podcast

That's an amazing nothing of a quote. "As far along . . . as we've been . . . since I've been here." I.e. spinning our wheels for the last 18 months. Let's hope Queens is a real thing on background; this quote doesn't inspire much hope taken alone.

Wasn't showing for me either, and if I realized the quote was in the image I would have found a way to see it. Thanks for typing it out.
