The MLS Elite

And I happen to also think, based on what I've seen, RBNY is going to be really good because they have a good manager (who's a dick) and tons of good homegrown depth. I wouldn't quite call them part of the elite, though.
Here's an off-topic question. What would you think about Jesse Marsch for USMNT coach?

Never. He has one plan for tactics and it’s that or nothing - his nonstop high press won’t work against technically superior international teams. And he’s never had a defense worth a damn, and I’d say that’s due to coaching more than talent.

Potentially best we’ve had. I have a few others I’d prefer, but far more below him.
For years, we punched above our weight by playing hard and with a chip on our shoulder. There is no doubt we'd get that back under him. I also think he'd do well tactically. He's also an insufferable prick, but I think I could be okay with it when he is OUR insufferable prick.

Not always, but where those two things overlap is where you get the elite.

NYCFC: so efficient we might not even be top ten in payroll
Toronto: spend a ton, currently ninth in the Eastern Conference
Atlanta: most likely to fall in the Venn overlap but kind of a mess at the back
Columbus: lol Precourt

So who's the elite?

This analysis is really lacking.

Toronto is elite for one. Say what you will about the table, but that's blindingly obvious.

Don't know where we are on payroll overall, but we are up there, so to say that we don't both spend more and choose wisely is silly.

Atlanta is elite notwithstanding their issues on defense.

If there is a hole in the Venn diagram, it is a team like New Jersey, which gets it done through its academy.

Let's see how the season plays out. Last year, the league was more imbalanced than has typically been the case - a point that was widely noted and commented upon. I think we will see more of the same this year.

[how do we not have the upside down smiley emoji on here?]

How about a friendly MLS Cup beer bet: you get your elite four, I get the rest of the league. (NYCFC's a freebie because if we win I'll buy everyone here a beer anyway.)
Bet sounds good. I already owe plenty of Mugs of Ale anyway. What date do I pick?

I think the only MLS coach I would consider for that role right now is Gregg Berhalter. He has done an very good job with Columbus on a limited budget (8th, 3rd, 2nd+MLS Cup Appearance, 9th, 5th+EC Finals). Played in Europe. Weathered locker room issues.

Ooh, ooh. I want to play. I’ll take 5, you get 10k danbux plus up to $50 bar tab. I get a $40 bar tab.

And yes, I do realize that the stats are against me solely because like 4 of my 5 must come from the East, thereby making it almost no better than a 50/50 after accounting for cannibalization.

You're on. Who are your four?

So 1,000 DBs = $1? Where to I exchange them?

Who are those that you'd prefer? Just curious, not disagreeing with you; I think I'd rank Marsch similarly (not the best, far from worst). My top choice would probably be Gregg Berhalter. It's impressive what he does with Columbus year after year, with less than elite talent / spending. I also think he gears towards a playing style that is admirable, yet achievable. Not to mention that, with the team maybe moving to Austin, perhaps he'd want out of his current situation anyway.

Close second would probably be Tab Ramos, but I'm kind of hoping that USSF decides to expand the USMNT GM role from its (rumor has it) very narrow scope, and Tab gets that position. I don't think anyone else has better insight into the full range of age levels and players on the men's side.
