The Third Rail Is The Biggest Joke I've Ever Seen

No it can't start in any section its takes hold in the SG and grows from there.
I can stand up and yell "In New York Kaka means shit" and its going nowhere. 500 people doing it together gets it started

Or it's going nowhere because that is lazy and unoriginal?

TBH, I wouldnt be bothered if the Third Rail failed and entered obscurity. I never much was a fan of the name or imagery. Something about power fists, lightning bolts, and the name Third Rail that just reminds me of the Third Reich.

The names seemed to similar...and the SS shape and lighting bolt shape seemed similar to me. Thats how it all connected. Add in a power first, and that whole totalitarian things just comes together in my head.

Sh!tty I know...but its one of the first things that came to mind when I found out about the group and saw the logos. The crap at the beginning of the season about racist supporters infiltrating the group didnt help either.

*Shrug*...make fun if you wish...but Im not the only one who's said it. I have a couple friends who follow soccer that said the same thing...especially after the whole nazi/racist drama at the beginning of the season.

Anyone who hears "Third Rail" and thinks Nazis has no personal connection to NYC culture. I don't care if you grew up and lived here you somehow managed to stay completely unconnected to the city.
The third real means
  • electricity
  • power
  • a danger zone: "social security is the third rail of politics"
  • possibly a way to electrocute yourself by peeing on it
The lightning symbol ties directly into the electrical/power aspect so that does nothing. And the power fist is much more tied to - if anything - Black power/nationalism than Nazism. In fact, the most famous incident where the power fist crossed with sports was at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Tommie Smith and John Carlos, American athletes who finished first and third in their event, kept their heads down and fists raised throughout the US national anthem. Created quite a stir. Later Smith said it wasn't a black power fist but a human rights salute.

I don't think the Third Rail designers meant to evoke this, either, but it is both closer in time and in imagery than the Nazis to the TR logo. Here is what the Nazis did with their hands at big outdoor sporting events. From Triumph of the Will:

Mussolini trading the fascist salute with Italian troops.

The power fist a staple of Communists, and communist iconography, as well as broader non-communist but definitely leftist organizations.

Despite this I don't think the Third Rail has anything to do with Communism, or the AFL-CIO.

Meanwhile, to look at the TR logo and think "Nazis" requires a total stunning ignorance of New York City culture and history, as well as the history of sports and politics, the iconography of fascism and communism, and basic 20th century history.

At the end of the day, what's come to be known as "tifo" (which is a complete bastardization of the word) is just adults doing arts and crafts.

As an outsider, I think the whole problem with TR is that it was founded a cart-before-the-horses organization. Part of this may be out of necessity, with fans having something to rally around from the start and the franchise having something to work with. But getting a huge group of persons to do something in a stadium setting is a lot different from getting a smaller group on the same page at a bar, and different from discussing things online.

Im black and grew up in NYC.

I know all about the history of Black Power, racism, communism, fascism, Nazis, etc.

Dont blame me and other fans for getting an inkling of Third Reich, when the Third Rail allowed racist wannabe nazis to infiltrate them earlier this season. There's also the fact that neo nazi idiots have appropriated the power first for some time now. And its something I, as a former punk (the sub culture), saw idiot nazi punks try to throw around. They dont just do heil hitlers. The assholes have adopted the power first to mock racial minorities and to mock reds (communists)...as well as claim it as their own.

So yeah, its not a wild, weird thing for a black man who's mindful of racism (both its past and modern history)...to draw comparisons between imagery and racist language he's heard from two groups named the Third *insert an R word*. Its not a wild or incorrect thing at all.

Can't we all just be libertarian free market capitalists? I'm appropriating the "fist full of dollars" as the hand gesture.

So when you guys see me waving a $20 in my fist at the stadium, you'll know what it stands for. Or I could just be ordering a beer.

It's your opinion, and that cannot be discounted. I've never heard that connection before, but with a diverse population from differing backgrounds and life experiences, the terminology will mean different things to everyone. I'm fairly certain that was never on the minds of the groups founders though.

Im not saying it was on the minds of Third Rail supporters. I know it definitely wasnt. Especially with how the third rail of subway tracks is pretty much known by all New Yorkers. I know the Third Rail means well and has good intentions. Im just saying that whole nazi/racist incident at the beginning of the season started got others and myself thinking...and we began to draw connections. Plus if you looked over social media or talked to rival fans...that incident made us look bad.

With how prevalent racism is in certain European country's soccer fandom, and UEFA's attempts to stamp it out, Ive just always been extra aware of these things.

I repeat. Im not saying the Third Rail is racist...nor am I saying they themselves ever had such intentions. I know they are good NYers who mean well. Im saying that given the incidents at the beginning of the season with infiltration by racist hooligans, in the aftermath I heard stuff from people critical of what happened. Things were said like "Third Rail? More like Third Reich...amirite?" And for people already aware of the problem in Europe, its easy to see how someone could make such remarks.
