Can’t spell hero without Ethan Horvath.

HISTORIC FIRST CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WIN
My god, what a heroic performance from Horvath, to come off the bench and be simply immense.

Nations league. but yes - great win and Horvath the hero!

have to say those fans tossing stuff is just really bad. hope they get consequences. people really suck these days.

Mexican fans (and a lot of central american teams for that matter) are notorious for having shitty fans that throw stuff.

but holy shit this game had EVERYTHING!
Goals? Check
Come from behind victory? Check
Yellow cards? Check
Red card? Check
CONCACAF-y player brawls? Check
Ref calling CONCACAF calls? Check
Ref pointing to the spot like an absolute diva? Check
Fans tossing things? Check
Overtime? Check
Penalty spot save? Check
Late extra-time winner with shirt-pull-off? Check

What else am I missing that this game had? It was all of soccer put into one single game. And I love it.

The very soccer federation move to stop the game when the fans chanted bad things but not when they threw things that hit and hurt players - Gio was still rubbing his head after the medal and trophy ceremony.
Multiple scrums that never quite developed into fights. ETA. - oh you had this
Set pieces. Set pieces. Set pieces.
The unexpected sub to hero story.
Multiple game changing VAR calls.
Not just a red card but a head coach red card.
Pitch invaders
Broadcast stage invaders.
Deuce in shades and a camo jacket.

Oh shoot I forgot the pitch invaders and the guy that disappeared that everyone wants to know what happened to him LOL.

But yeah, this game just had everything. I doubt we'll see a game this good and action-packed again in the near future.

Revisiting the red card called on McKenzie. I know the announcers were fairly adamant that it shouldn't have been given, where could he have put his arm, etc. And I see that, and don't fault McKenzie for anything there, but I think that should have been given. His arm was away from his body enough and it was clear that if the ball didn't hit his arm, it was going to be on frame. In my opinion, I think that should have been given and I think USMNT fans would feel the same way had the team colors been flipped in this scenario.

However, at the same time, I felt that that whole situation was a bit unlucky. The header didn't have a whole ton of pace on it and Horvath was in good position to be able to save it, I'm not sure it would have threatened as a goal.

I thought both VAR PK calls were iffy. Both would have been very acceptable as original PK calls if given, and less justifiable as clear and obvious on review. But neither was absolutely wrong.

I love that Dempsey hates VAR because it messes with goal celebration vibes.
