Wall Street City: Stock Trading & General Investing Thread

I like your thought process, but that doesn't apply when you are investing 100% of your portfolio in a single stock of the company you work for. Shit hits the fan and you lose your savings and your job.

Yes of course, I totally agree with you 100%. I advise your exact rationale to my clients.

My comment was more based on investment philosophy rather than portfolio allocation.

Guys -- all kidding aside, I have been a professional investor or had professional investors as clients every day of my life for the last 15 years and here is what I have learned: Buy a few low-cost passive index funds or ETFs. Don't over-diversify by buying 10 of them and don't try to time the market. People who are smarter than you, have more resources than you and spend every waking moment trying to figure out how to make money in the market are failing miserably right now. You (and I) haven't got a prayer.
Hey, as a former hedge fund analyst, I strongly concur.

I'll add that I will play a leveraged etf or a single stock similar to Jack Jack 's strategy, but I only do that on the basis of a macro theory I feel good about. But by an large, for most people, just index. I'd venture a guess most hedge funds' returns aren't much better than leveraged index fund returns anyway.

bit of a necrobump, but I don't even bother with picking ETFs and use Betterment. It makes fractional shares easier, does tax loss harvesting & will adjust the dollar cost averaging to better track the target allocation. Same goes for Wealthfront, there's little differences IMO (small difference in fees & Wealthfront does not expose you to REITs).

I am using betterment as well for my safety net fund with a very conservative allocation. Using a regular saving account that will be getting interest at 0.04% is just a waste with the rate of inflation nearly double that.

Might be worth suggesting, Goldman Sachs recently opened up their own savings bank (for compliance reasons) and are offering 1.05% APY.

By all means not a HUGE amount but better than the tiny fraction you'd get in most savings accounts.

There are a bunch of online banks that give over 1%, but my time weighted return at Betterment with an 85% bond/15% stock split is at 5.9%. Obviously, there is some more risk but I am pretty happy so far with Betterment.

Blue Apron is down about 10% today after Amazon announced they're getting into prepped meals.

As someone who holds Amazon stock and is lazy this is AMAZING news.

I hope you're not the guy that orders the kit and proceeds to be excited by the 15 courses that are all individually packaged inside of the box? Those little plastic bottles aren't rancid shots, but vinegar and olive oil.

I've actually never ordered them because they seemed overpriced. But if Amazon can undercut them I'd be willing to check it out. Would be great for something like breads and pastas to make from scratch and things that you only need a small portion of.

I always end up throwing out chicken broth because I never use it all. JUST SELL THEM IN SMALLER SIZES!

Get on the bouillon train

Pro tip, stick a bouillon cube in your rice when you start heating the water and that investment will pay out in flavor

Agree with the bouillon train. I use powder instead of cubes though as I like making homemade versions of commercial things, like from-scratch rice-a-roni, say. Uh oh, looks like we might need a cooking thread if we don't have one already.

Plus, bonus points for spelling bouillon correctly.

Another option is just to find other uses for the chicken broth, which include
  • cooking rice or other grains or pseudo grains (rice, polenta, couscous, etc)
  • cooking pasta
  • cooking beans
  • a component of tomato sauce
  • a component of gravy
  • dozens of simple soups including basic noodle or egg-drop with crackers

I never thought about using it to cook pasta. Man I have so much to learn.

You can sub it for all sorts of things that call for water, and it adds a bit of flavor.
I can't wait till my wife tries my new coffee recipe!

But in all seriousness that's great advice, now I'm excited again.

I wonder what Dan's expression will be when he logs on see this as one of the most active threads today and then sees it's all about cooking.

Woah boy! This thread made me look at my TSP (federal employee 401k) from past work and DAYAMMM!! Up 40% in a little over a year. I wish I had all my 401k and IRA money in that fund lol.

It looks like Amazon is begging for regulatory pressure. It sure doesn't help to have a Republican lead government while Bezos is running a liberal propaganda* organization. I've wondered how strong Amazon would be when split from AWS.

*Most traditional media has fallen into that category, one side or the other, but the WP is among the worst, and to think Bezos bought it for any reason other than political influence is lol.

Definitely. I've taken to making rice pilaf in my rice cooker lately. Rice, water, bouillon, chicken, salt, saffron, cayenne pepper. Super easy, too. Just saute an onion in a ton of butter and then throw everything into the rice cooker.

Yeah, as much as I hate the bastardization of the media by the right, the left has also done the same and the Washington Post is a clear example.

We have Ronald Regan's administration to thank for this when the FCC's Fairness Doctrine was eliminated leading the way from actually fair and balanced, to this.

But I digress.

Today Elon Musk said people are overvaluing tesla.
