Wall Street City: Stock Trading & General Investing Thread

Hivemind says buy Ethereum, and HODL. But don’t put more than 2% of assets in crypto.
I haven’t been able to understand its use case but was surprised by how quick it rebounded to 1k this week

It's a programming infrastructure for smart contracts*. Likely to be one of the most legitimately useful cryptos of all ("Ethereum" is the ecosystem/virtual machine which runs programs.; "Ether" is the currency spent within the ecosystem to incentivize processing of the programs by the network). Similarly, look at VeChain, which is all about logistics management via blockchain and has several big corporate partners (e.g. Price Waterhouse Coopers) and is being looked upon very favorably by the Chinese government.

*meaning contracts enforced and verified peer-to-peer via blockchain

Another huge jobs report number! Slower wage gains than expected, but it's proving the theory that we are still short of "full employment" when we can add 300k+ jobs and no change in the headline rate or u6. The key number is the labor force participation rate, we in theory could have a ton of room to move in that category before wage gains and inflation follows.

The good news is the 10 year will stay below 3 a bit longer!

Anyone here read into Newsletters? I deposited a bit into E*TRADE but honestly have very little experience. Best places to go for advice?

Initiative Q
This isn't really an investment. It's a payment system. But it also kind of looks like a cryptocurrency (though they insist it is different). It requires $0 zero money to get in, but for now you have to be invited.
Initiative Q is building a new payment network. To get people to adopt it, they’re giving away significant sums of their future currency to early people. They require only name, email, and an invite from an existing user. Here’s my invite link:

The basic idea is any payment system needs a robust-sized network to succeed, so they're gifting incentives for people to join and use it. Currently it also doesn't operate. Will it launch? Will it work? Will the Q currency ever be worth anything? Nobody knows. But for $0 down and no commitment I joined when i had a chance at an invite. My invite link -- in fact everyone's invite link -- is limited so if you want in, jump on it. To get your full allotment you will similarly need to sign up some friends, etc.

I also have to verify you after you join, so if I do not already know your real identity, DM me with your real name so I can do so.

Ponzi scheme for email/data accumulation. Maybe not, but seems dicey to sign up for.

At some point they’re gonna be asking to link a bank account and that’s from a company not yet functioning but trolling for accounts.

Disagree. There are too many simple ways to buy emails cheaply that are more effective and simpler than this elaborate setup. And there are proven ways to get people to pay willingly for crypto units.

Plus, assuming you're right about email harvesting, I already get dozens and sometimes >100 spam emails (well filtered) every day, most sent to a special email account I created for use with commercial entities and which I used here. What could this possibly do to make that measurably worse?

As for privacy, any entity with your name and zip code can already learn almost everything about you-- and possibly more than you know yourself -- from easily obtained sources unless you have lived your entire life without ever using google, or a loyalty card, or bank or credit card, or leased or financed a car, or used EZ Pass. I mean, they really know everything, to the point that women get mail targeted to being pregnant without even having to know if they bought a testing kit or visited a doctor. Concern that someone is harvesting email addresses is kind of like closing a screen door when the flood hits.

This is no more dicey than Square, Paypal or Venmo when they started. When and if they launch -- and start asking for financial info -- they will either have respected commercial partners on board or not. I'll decide then whether to share more info. Until then, all they have is a name and email address, which -- like I said -- they can get countless other ways and does not increase my existing privacy risk.
