Will We Be Able To Climb Out Of Our Hole And Make The Playoffs?

Damn, Jersey would be out of the playoffs if they started today.

What a disaster after their start to the season.

3rd-8th are separated by just 3 points and 5th through 10th are also seperated by just 3 points.

Meaning the race for the playoffs could be pretty spectacular down the stretch.

Exciting but meaningless with massive differences in games played. I'd still consider us about 3-6 points back of the playoffs with some serious work to do.

Optimistic about our chances though ...

Current last playoff spot going by ppg goes to NJ at 1.21.

NYC:
Today - 1.06
After W vs NJ - 1.17
After W vs MTL - 1.28

So even after 3 straight wins and the most points in MLS since May 20 (I think that's the right date), we still need two more straight victories to get into the playoffs.

I believe ...

with the new players coming in we should have no problems making the playoffs, i think the question now is can we win the mls cup? imo with the new players we will be one of the best teams in the mls as positions that were weaknesses should hopefully become strengths. people talk about giovinco being the best player in mls but remember that he is a juve reject whilst we are most likely getting a juve legend who just played in a champions league final

Honestly with Lampard, Iraola, possibly Pirlo will definitely help us a lot and if NYCFC keep playing the way they are in terms of playing as one then nothing is impossible.

This kinda talk makes me nervous.

Why the hell not? Our new additions address the weakest areas of the team, theoretically turning them into the strongest areas. No other MLS club is having such a dramatic improvement and simultaneous net inflow of talent.

We can do it

As I have been stating even in the midst of our awful play a few weeks back, it is still quite early. There is plenty of season left, making the playoffs is a very real possibility, heck even finishing top3 is still a real possibility, at the same time we can lose our next 2 or three in a row and be back to square one and even then it still would be possible to make the playoffs. The bottom line is, it is still early. Come late July and early August, thats when the MLS season really starts to get into gear and that is when we should start to really pay attention to the standings.

BTW, I think the signing that will benefit us the most is Iraola. Can't wait to see how he improves our backline. With Iraola, Facey, Hernandez, and hopefully Saunders continuing his stellar play, we should be good at the backend.

After the Pirlo announcement these odds go way up. I mean for one of our players to get with Taylor Swift. MLS Cup should be impossible. And if it isn't oh what a sad statement for the league.

Why?

NYCFC have the same chance as any team who have committed ownership and make the right personal decisions. That's the strength of the league. We made the right decisions with our Technical Director and Coach - we will see how the DP's work out but I expect us to end up in 3rd to 5th place in the east when the regular season ends and if they are playing well going into the playoffs it's 50/50 whether they make the MLS Cup Final. No cause for sadness really ...... it would make for a great blueprint for Atlanta and LAFC

Maybe you're right. Maybe it isn't sad. Just different. No new team can enter an elite league in Europe and win the title in year one. It takes time to be able to build a team to that level. And as has been said many times on these forums we are not an elite league.

Right, but those leagues don't have playoffs. Most people here aren't saying we're going to win the Supporter's Shield, jut that if we make the playoffs, there's no reason we can't win the championship.

Good point.

Just a few weeks ago the playoffs seemed like a distant dream that wouldn't come true. Now, it's as if the entire mood on the forum is trending upwards. A few wins and suddenly we're gonna win MLS cup! I'm loving the positivity here guys! I hope it translates into success on the pitch.

But that is in a pro/rel system where the teams promoted are paying approx $20m for their roster while the teams in the league are already paying $500m to $750m for theirs.

Oh and I'm not sure I want to be an elite league if I know that for the next three decade only 3 teams can win. Not interested in that at all.

Well, we currently sit in 7th with 20 points behind Jersey and Toronto with 23 points each. Jersey has 1 game in hand, Toronto has 2.

2nd-4th all have 24 points. 4th place New England has played 2 more games than us, so we're sitting pretty well against them.

Orlando and Columbus have the same exact record for 2nd/3rd. Columbus is shown as 2nd, so they must have the tiebreaker.

There's still plenty of MLS regular season to go but DCU probably only need 2 or 3 wins the rest of the season to lock-up a playoff spot. Columbus looks like they're in. Toronto have so many points and so many games in hand, its hard to imagine them not getting in.

That's 3 clubs pretty much locked in already, in my mind.

That leaves 3 spots for NYCFC, RBNJ, New England, Chicago, Montreal, Philadelphia and Orlando.

New England, Orlando and Jersey have the inside track now but NYCFC is one of the hottest teams in the league and only poised to get hotter.

Montreal and Chicago have been "weak" but are still very close to the rest of the pack and have like 4 or 5 games in hand on everyone in front of them.

Orlando's been doing better than expected so far but can their team keep its composer down the stretch?

Jersey's been fading. I really believe they will miss the playoffs and I think our game against them at the end of this month could be the beginning of the end of their season.

....although the math is not my forte like you I Believe in in simple terms that if will win the next 2-3 games to make a place in the playoffs. So lets believe!
