Wingert Officially Waived

Ballouchy is RSL as well. I think there was some logic to bringing them in year 1 and phased them out as we were able to pick up better players. Overall, we fared much better imho than OC did imho in the draft.

There is also some talk of getting rid of the expansion draft and giving new teams some more allocation money to handle transfer fees which would have avoided the need for the RSL clusterfuck.
I agree. It made sense to overload -- to some degree -- on RSL players. Starting a team with 2-3 dozen players who have no experience with each other or the coach is super hard. OC had a small core of players from their lower league iteration. Kreis reasonably valued a core of players he knew, who knew each other, and his system. We probably had more than was necessary but the concept made sense. It also makes sense in year 2 that a different coach, able to work with a different core, wouldn't need any of them unless they had enough to remain on that basis, and it seems none of them did.

Woah, of course I appreciate the context. Overall, we performed about exactly where I expected.

What I meant by this statement is that of all our acquisitions last year, the ones who have been cut were the former RSL group. In other words, the specific targeting of RSL castoffs was a failure, relative to the rest of the acquisitions. Mullins, Taylor, Hernandez, Ballouchy, and McNamara all came out of the expansion draft as well.

I agree, hindsight is always 20/20 but last years plan was clearly built around the idea that slightly less talented players that know the system are more valuable to an expansion team than more talented players unfamiliar with the system. That being said it was still an expansion draft so it's hard to say how much more talented the players we could have gotten would be had we just gone talent over system.

Won't say the obvious things like he was bad on the field but seemed to be a nice guy, just good luck to him, both we and him should move on.

The most exciting part (for me) is that 17 is my favourite number to be put on a shirt so hopefully it's gonna have an impact owner in our team now.

Does this mean his salary does not count in our cap?
Depends on his contract:
"Clubs may waive players based on performance at any time during the MLS season. Players with guaranteed contracts will continue to have their salary budget charge applied to the club salary budget, subject to any settlement. Players on Semi-Guaranteed Contracts can be waived prior to July 1 of any year and free up the corresponding budget space. If a player on a Semi-Guaranteed Contract is waived after July 1, his salary budget charge will continue to count against the team’s salary budget. Any settlement amount will be charged to the club’s salary budget. "

These are the 2015 rules as 2016 rules aren't posted yet, but I doubt this changed much or at all.
Correct. We can terminate one contract per year I believe. Best case another team picks him up off waivers which will allow us more options to shed salary in the future if need be
Yeah so if Wingert's the guy we are buying out, it just proves that our number crunchers are on crack cocaine. Really?

He's gone and slow and over the hill, I'm fine with that. But if we wasted the ONE salary buyout on Wingert I'm going to be pissed. Plenty of other bigger fish we should be going after. I'm hoping he was never on a guaranteed contract.

And losing another American? Sound strategy?

Like who? We are 1-2 over on Int'l slots and maxed out on DPs and probably already using all GAM/TAM. Ain't no more superstars coming.

We don't have many guys making over $225k (Wingert's salary) based solely on last year's numbers: Villa, Lampard, Pirlo, and Mix. So who else would we save the buyout for?

I'd prefer Pirlo or Lampard personally...

How the fuck did no one tag me? Definitely going to sit in my old seats at least once next year to boo all the dumbfucks who shouted at me when I would boo Grabaseat, Brosky and Wingert. But for now, my wife won an impromptu night out since I just saw this.

Midas out, sluts.

At least Lampard will be around all year. I wouldn't be angry if Pirlo was bought out after he left for the Euros.

Zlatan's contract expires in June...
Interesting idea. I don't think Pirlo would agree to it since he has stated he wants to honor his contract, but if he wanted to head back to Europe, then Zlatan would be an ideal replacement.

He is smart and will stay here and pay the lower taxes.

Despite his faults, Wingert played hard. Should get another chance in MLS somewhere, just at a lower salary to justify a non-starting role.

He seemed to have been universally loved at RSL. So it'd be cool to see him brought back.

Do we have any former RSL players left? Crazy how Kreis, Grabavoy, Velasquez, Wingert, and KWS are all gone after just one year. What a failure.
Ballouchy and Saunders. I'm impartial with Ballouchy. When he was onpoint he was amazing...unfortunately that only happened about three times.

I am going to be in the minority here. I appreciated Wingert switching out of position to center back for most of the year and taking the subway to the stadium for a game he was playing in. Wingert wasn't someone I was disappointed to see in the lineup even after Iraola and Angelino joined us even though he was an average to below average player for us.

As much as I liked having Wingert on the team, I didn't think he was going to start this season and everybody knows our defense was the weakest part of our lineup last season. Its a smart move and I like the confidence that we are not going to want to waive anyone mid-season.

I hope Wingert becomes a starter for the Rapids and plays well except against us.
