I went for Star-name striker and Proven midfielder.

I think a star-name striker would bring attention back to the team, and a proven midfielder would really help buff up the maxi problem and, if combining well, would. bring the talent back.

Look I know MLS 3.0 vs 2.0 vs 1.0 or whatever but this is the New York Fing market. We don't want someone washed up but if there's not a recognizable name in the attack (be that mid, wing, or out and out striker) your just not going to make an impact here. I know their having an off year but I really think New York should be run more like LA , though lack of stadium might be some of the issue there.

LA are dead last. I don't think we need a million stars, which is why I think just one star striker to garner interest would be good.

LA also don't have any depth/supporting players that are functional so the big names have even more to do. If there's one positive of NYCFC, it's that we have decent supporting players throughout the roster. The killer for us this year is lack of DP support to push us up and above since Maxi has felt his age this year and Mitri/Medina have been abysmal. We're a mid table team because we lack someone to give us an edge. Once we get a player or two to give us something special in moments we need it I think we have a chance to be an elite team, vs. LA who just have big names and no support. Almost like a fancy façade on the front of the house to show off but then having cheap support beams and walls.

LAFC or LA GAlaxy?

i kinda get what you saying but i dont want another pirlo situation. i mean ATL, LAFC, Seattle, Toronto have won not with world known names, some have some reputation in certain segments but not ultra superstar names.

Ah yeah, that too. Our team can handle it because we're not built AROUND big players, we're built well and a big player would level us up, imo.

star striker and proven midfielder here.

we need someone to carry the torch when maxi leaves. Since this is still MLS, having a world class striker makes all the difference in front of net.

Kun Aguero is out of contract after this season, so maybe we can woo him to NYC? :D

See, my question is MC have so many midfielders sitting doing nothing... why not send 'em to NY for a year? :|

This is what I went for too. This is New York, and judging by our attendance last season and the fan energy around the team this year, it just feels like they need a big name. And a proven midfielder because if Maxi doesn't have much left in the tank, they need to start planning for life after Maxi.

Obviously winning is the most important thing but I'm also talking about pulling in crowds and having any relevance in the market place. We need at least one big name for the latter .

I picked young striker and proven midfielder, but I want to be a little more specific.

First, rather than a striker, I’d actually prefer a winger - someone who can break past a defender off the dribble. The kind of role that Harrison and Mitri served so well for us.

Second, I chose a midfielder, but I’d specifically like to see an attacking mid - a Maxi replacement. And, I’d like to see a proven player there - the kind of person that Maxi was coming in.

if you hoping coverage at the yankee/mets/giants/ knicks level here you lying to yourself. Pirlo/ lamapard/ villa didnt do that, there was coverage within soccer media but thats not really NY media. sure the post and daily news and few others occasionally wrote about the team but didnt really move needle. there are no talk shows talking about the team i think all soccer stuff is thru sirius xm stuff so not over the air stuff locally.

I feel like winning might give a blip of relevance but we not there yet. Plus promoting your own stars here would help. only messi/ ronaldo level hype will bring relevance if not thru winning. oh and the stadium is an issue too.

I agree with all of this. As a gloss, I would say that to possibly get sustained interest in the broader market would require sustained winning. Something like 5 consecutive conference championship appearances with 2 cups at least might get noticed.

Obviously I'm not expecting coverage like the other sports but we definitely felt like we had more significance in the early years. Maybe part of that was just being shiny and new but I think some of that was Villa. People will come out to see a Star no matter the sport. Winning consistently would help but in New York, IMO, if you do that with a bunch of hard working plodders your not going to get the same kind of crowds (when no Covid) or energy that game breaking super star like Villa brought.

We need a ticket selling, attention grabbing star! I think we have a fresh shot at re-invigorating the fan base after lockdowns are down and events are back, so we need to maximize this opportunity to rebuild. Obviously, it helps if he still has some years and can still be a dominate goalscorer for a couple seasons.

The team was averaging 25,000'ish fans a game, I believe, over the first few years. It's dropped a lot closer to 20,000. Getting 25,000 fans a game is pretty relevant no matter if the media covers the team.

thats part of it too. it was shiny new thing. but villa stayed the longest and attendances were dropping still. i really prefer a winning team than just putting butts in seats, even if it means only being relevant to a niche like its been so far. i dont think it will be much more than that here in nyc.

18-25K is not bad attendances considering no main stream media follows the team.

whether or not mainstream media follows us, this is a city full of immigrants and foreign nationals who watch the top leagues in europe and south america. if we bring a big name from a top league, they will catch wind of it simply due to the fact that they follow that sort of news anyway. the local media is only relevant for very casual fans of the game.

i didn't even live in NYC when villa signed and the club was started, but I knew about it simply because i followed la liga.

if you want to go that route it depends who it is. for south america fans i feel like villa worked since he played in barcelona and won a world cup with spain ( a NT that had so many fans based on how they played and having so many real madrid/ barcelona players within it. two teams that have massive following in latin america) so he has lots of fans.
pirlo and lampard are very much highly respected but not loved to barcelona/ real madrid level. (side note- this is why i think queensborough will have good start in their following based on villas involvement)

all in all its great to get world class players if it works on the field, so far we only had villa who fits the bill. i really dont like just bringing someone to fill seats and thats it, because as soon as he is gone so are the majority of those fans.
