I don't know that I agree with you. If they think they have leverage (and I don't know when you have to get your protected player list in) with Houston, NYCFC and possibly Orlando still looking for a GK, they could protect all 3. Philly has come out already and stated that there will be major roster turnover this year.

They have probably 400k by my estimate (100k hit for MacMath, 75k hit for Blake and 225k for Rais M'Bolhi). I don't know how that stacks up around the league, but that's roughly 12% of their Cap tied up in GK. I don't think that's crazy.

It is certainly possible, but my personal opinion is they just wouldn't do that. The protected list has to be in by Monday, December 8th. I have to believe they'll try to move MacMath before then. With the limited number of protected players they'll be using 2 spots for GK and that's a lot.

Even if they do protect them I can't imagine MacMath not starting to bring his fight to the press and trying to force his way out of there. At least for his sake I hope they let him go. #FreeMacMath

No I don't think M'Bohi is automatically protected. However that being said if they left him unprotected I wouldn't want any part of that long term contract.

This is what an NBC affiliate in Philly had to say about the situation. They write in here that he would need to be protected.

M'Bolhi is not auto-protected but Blake (Philly's #3) is because he is a Generation Adidas player.
