2019 Offseason Thread

I have no issue with the move. But to say he provides no value is silly. That’s an average contract in MLS.

thats the thing, we never knew how bad was he i think he came in as a sub for like two games then open cup happened and that was it. its probably for the best but i dont know if he was ultra trash.

We never saw him play but we do have some clue where the coaching staff saw him in the pecking order. Ibeagha beat him out as the primary CB backup pretty early in camp and never lost that spot. Based on what they were paying him vs what we were paying Ibeagha I think we can say Hountondji was intended to be the 3rd CB and he didn't live up to that plan. Either Hountondji wasn't nearly what they expected or Ibeagha wildly exceeded expectations either way it's good that we cut bait. Is this our one free cut for the year or did we already use it?

So how much cap space has been cleared?

Berget would have hit the cap at $500k. This is another $258k. Wallace and McNamara combined for another $415k or so. Sweat got a big raise. Herrera is gone. Don’t know what Parks makes.

Possible that we have $1 million in cap space plus the DP cap hold of $500k?

How did he provide value? he played 10 minutes and got hurt so why keep in on the roster ? With 258,000 + international spot NYCFC can bring in a much better player that can help the team.

It didn't mention buyout in the press release, so I'm guessing we still have that.
The one buyout per year only buys out guaranteed contracts, which I'm assuming is only given to a small portion of players on this league. After a buyout, the league still owns the contract and has to find a home for the guy or keep paying him to chill at home.

This cut is prior to the 2019 season, not retroactive to before the 2018 season. We don't really know what value he would have provided this season, but clearly the club felt that it wouldn't be enough and cut him. I'm optimistic about what we can do with the spot and cap space, so hopefully this is the prelude to a couple signings.

I don’t think Ibeagha beat him out in camp. Pretty sure Hountondji was above Ibeagha on the depth chart, and then he got hurt just before the start of the year. Chanot got the red in the opener, which forced us to go to Ibeagha, and he impressed right then on out.

I couldn’t fault for PV for going back to Ibeagha from then on because he earned that playing time with solid play, and further limited Hountondji’s opportunities.

Was looking forward to seeing what he could do with an opportunity in the USOC, but that early injury derailed that.

Yeah rough year for Hountondji aside from the injuries we should probably chalk it up as a Ibeagha wildly exceeding expectations and locking down the spot when given a chance as opposed to it being a mark against Hountondji. We haven't had many tall CBs I agree it would have been interesting to see what impact Hountondji would have had.

Cap savings. (Rawls was another $69k, but not sure he hit the cap)

ETA, FYI the entire Cap is $4mm. And we opened up 5 INT spots.

With ibeagha, hountondji was expendable. Those those limited minutes he would have gotten can easily be spread between our youngsters who don't hit the cap or take up International spots.

Ben Sweat is now your 4th CB
In a situation in which two of the other 3 are unavailable, I'd imagine Sweat may stay out left, Ring gets pushed to CB and one of our 29 mids starts. Or Scally is our 4th CB.

And I really don't think we should be comfortable with either scenario. We've had 2 CBs out quite a bit the last two seasons and have had a couple of occasions with 3 CBs out.

I agree with what others have said. This seems like a move based on his salary and wanting to use it for something else. $258K is a good wage for a 3rd CB - those guys will play a lot. Except, we have a really good 3rd CB in Ibeagha, who makes a lot less. The belief here is that they found someone else they really like who they can sign on limited wages to provide depth.

I also think this makes it a lot less likely we will play much of the season with 3 or 5 in the back.
