Aiden O'Neill [Midfielder]

I’m really excited to see what he will add to the team. I think he may allow Keaton to have even more impact on the field which will help the transition and attack. If only we had added another winger or another 10 to actually have more than a 1 dimensional attack.

Hopefully, he will help us keep more possession of the ball and help our possession have a better start and development. That can lead to more goals even without changes up front.

Seems like from the highlights, O'neill can also occasionally score some bangers from distance. It won't be enough volume to offset the lack of scoring from the wingers, but it will be nice that he's a threat. I can't think of the last midfielder we had who was a threat to score from distance.

I thought about Tommy, but I wasn't sure if he counted as a midfielder or a winger. I guess he kind of played everywhere. The other player I thought of was Jacobson. I remember him scoring one screamer from the top of the box and then deciding that was his thing and proceeding to rocket 1-2 wildly off-target attempts per game, never to find the net again.

The thing about Aiden's bangers is that he looks more of a threat from his highlight video than he is. He has 10 career goals. He achieved 4 in a year twice. I think only 2 of his 10 were from outside the box. I think a reasonable expectation is he'll score 1-2 goals/year. I don't think opponents will consider him a threat. At least not from distance. I think they will be pretty pleased to see him shooting from outside the box.

I'm not down on him. I just don't think that aspect of his game is more likely to frustrate than thrill. I agree with the comments above that I'm excited for how he stabilizes our defense and unlocks our passing/transition.

Agreed, but:
It’s amazing what a couple of goals a year from non-frontline players can do to generate fun and goodwill.
Tinnerholm had 9 goals in 5 years. The club posted all of them today. Most were from close and hugged the ground. He was a master of hitting sharp angles. Maybe 2 were both from distance and featured height and power.
But he’ll always be TinnerBOOM!

Well, Sands scored 1 goal in 8 seasons, so I'll happily take 1-2 goals a season from O'Neill, we need more scoring from anywhere we can get it at this point.

Totally agree with both of these. I'm excited for him. I might have over-indexed to the concept that opposition would feel threatened by him.

Adding to the Aiden threat notion, interesting to hear Pascal in the pre-match today talk about wanting to make him more of a scoring threat than he has been to this point in his career. Kind of sounded like he imagined Aiden and Keaton in a double pivot with either one of them having free rein to crash the box.
