Barca's sanctions end in January so they will be able to spend again. This would be a big blow for the league. He seems happy here so I don't know if he wants to give up being a huge star to be a utility player. However its Barca... I hope he stays he is a great thing for this league and exactly what it needs to continue to grow.

Regardless this is something to monitor because I don't think Barca will be the only team sniffing around Toronto this off-season.

This would be bittersweet. He is great for the league and fun to watch.

That said, what a huge boost for the reputation of MLS! To go from the bench at Juve, to starting in Toronto, to Barcelona first team? The retirement league stigma is suddenly gone - Europeans can come over here mid career and still have a future in Europe.

Not to mention, our competitor loses a top player. Nice.

Depends if he ends up bench-warming at Barca too, of course...

The only thing that would be a bigger boost for MLS than Gio going to Barcelona would be Gio not going to Barcelona.

While it will suck loosing good players to better clubs over seas, its bound to happen. Its just going to be part of the process of the MLS growing into something more competitive. I see it as part of the progression. Eventually, as the league progresses, these occurrences will balance themselves out with good signings for us as well. But lets face it ... if you're a athlete and a club is going to pay you millions more to play with them, you're probably going. Especially if you currently young and play in the MLS.

I don't know if MLS is at the level to keep Giovinco, but it's been amazing to watch him this season and I also appreciated his praise for MLS when Pirlo contacted him before coming over. I'd like to think he stays and that he and Dos Santos are signs of things to come

Just as a heads up this article is based on pure speculation by some Spanish newspaper. There is no source at Barca saying that they are considering Giovinco.

Giovinco has blossomed in MLS. He's been my favourite player by a distance.

I would be astonished if a team of Barca 's calibre wanted him.
I'd speculatively suggest: he'll stay for next season and then, if his stock is still high, return to Italy.

I don't see him returning to Italy, the only good seasons he had in Serie A were at Parma, that's roughly his level in my opinion. He can be a very good player for a mid table team but not the likes of Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma etc... Kind of like Dempsey who was outstanding at Fulham but wasnt as good for Spurs. Giovinco's nearly 29, on $7m a year and Toronto would probably want around $15m for him, European teams would consider that massively overpriced, if he does move I can see it being to China, Middle East or Italy when he's nearing the end of his career, I'm pretty sure he'll stay at Toronto.

So one year in MLS then retire? Or one year in MLS then to another country?
I was thinking of the NCAA's version. Players will spend a year (or 18 months) in MLS and use it to stay fit and get playing time as a showcase for their next big contract in Europe?
