Really a terrible tragedy for all those involved. This team was having a wonderful run, first being promoted back to the Brazilian top flight in 2014 and flying to Colombia for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana finals against Atletico Nacional.

Their plane crashed near Medellin killing nearly everyone on board, as of now there are about 5 survivors.

The Argentina National team used the same plane a few weeks ago - still don't know why it crashed (weather, fuel, etc.), but still terrifying
Isn't Medellin surrounded on all sides by mountains? At dusk/night it could be tough for the best of pilots. I think I read that the sun had already gone down (5:44pm) when the plane crashed at 6:18pm.

I read that it was a mechanical error on either Vice or BBC.

I thought about the Argentine National team and wondered if it was the same flight were Messi got sick due to turbulence: http://www.marca.com/en/football/international-football/2016/11/14/5829fe06268e3e2d588b45dc.html

Updated: Vice mentions it being an electrical error

Horrible, horrible news. How clubs, families, fans, local communities etc can recover from these incidents is always beyond me; it would destroy me if it were to happen to a club (or anyone else) I was close to. That said, the way that the community rallies round in the aftermath is always a humbling sight to behold.

RIP to those who lost their lives. My thoughts are with their families and colleagues.

In more positive news, the BBC are saying that a number of teams are offering to give them players to help them finish their season, and there's a proposal to exempt them from relegation for three years to help them recover.
