They really need to push those dates as late as possible in the spring. They should make the final one game rather than two legs, and then have the five matchdays as follows:

January 8 (Fri) - First matchday of Liga MX Clausura
March 4 (Fri) - First matchday of MLS Regular Season
March 9 (Wed) - Potential CCL Date If Needed
March 16 (Wed) - Potential CCL Date If Needed

March 21-29 - First 2016 FIFA International Dates
April 6 (Wed) - CCL Quarterfinal Leg 1
April 13 (Wed) - CCL Quarterfinal Leg 2
April 20 (Wed) - CCL Semifinal Leg 1
April 27 (Wed) - CCL Semifinal Leg 2
May 4 (Wed) - CCL Final

May 8 (Sun) - Final matchday of Liga MX Clausura

It's a little cramped, but there are 7 non-international weeks between the start of the MLS Regular Season and the end of the Liga MX Clausura. They should really fit it in there so MLS is not at a competitive disadvantage by effectively playing these games during our preseason. They are currently scheduled for the two weeks prior to the start of the MLS Regular Season, with the finals on April 20 and April 27.

If MLS and Liga MX need weeks off for domestic cup competitions, there are two weeks in March that could be used to play the CCL Quarterfinals instead, freeing up two weeks in April.

This schedule would make for an exciting April. Any MLS team involved could get 2-3 of their 4-5 MLS games rescheduled that month to later in the year, to loosen up their schedule. Does anyone know if Liga MX gives their teams league byes in order to ease their schedule during the competition?

2 things

1) CONCACAF is talking about (meaning the are going to) go to a Spring to Fall schedule for CCL in the 2018 season which the only reason it might not happen is because...

2) the talk of the America's champions league that would be Spring to Fall as well. Though the ACL is a long shot.

Wow, I forgot about #1.

In the spring, there would be 2 qualifying matchdays and 6 group stage match days.

In the fall, there would be 6 knockout matchdays (though I still prefer a single-leg final, but see why they want each finalist to have a revenue generating home game.)

Looking again at my schedule above, it would be impossible to fit all 8 spring matchdays between the start of the MLS season and the end of the Clausura. One or both of the qualifying matchdays would have to be prior to the start of the MLS season, although that's not a huge deal because there would probably only be 2 MLS teams participating in the qualifying stage.

In the fall, the schedule would looks like this for 2016:

July 22 (Fri) - First matchday of Liga MX Apertura
July 27 (Wed) - Too close to start of Liga MX Apertura
August 3 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 1
August 10 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 2
August 17 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 3
August 24 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 4

August 29-September 5 - FIFA International Dates
September 7 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 5
September 14 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 6
September 21 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 7
September 28 (Wed) - Potential CCL Matchday 8

October 3-11 - FIFA International Dates
October 12 (Wed) - Too close to the International Date
October 19 (Wed) - Too big of break/close to end of MLS Regular Season

October 23 (Sun) - Final matchday of MLS Regular Season

Looks like there's about 8 potential matchdays in the fall for 6 games. The quarterfinals can be played before the end-of-summer international break. The semifinals would hopefully either be squeezed in before the break or after the break, rather than split up. And the finals can be played after, but before the October international break. That said, I have a suspicion they would put the finals in October anyway.

ufff way to cramped....you have to keep in Mind what MLS schedule is like since there are quite a few matchdays during the week in september and August to finish up season....also there may be US open cup commitments for some teams as well. .not even uefa champions league is that cramped.

Does anyone know if Liga MX gives their teams league byes in order to ease their schedule during the competition?

no but they tend to do "doble jornada" meaning matchday 5 on weekend, matchday 6 on tues/wed and matchday 7 that follwing weekend...they do this in the fall portion of the tourney.

i think they do this twice during fall season and once during spring season.
