p.s. apologies to Mods for not putting this in the MLS Forum, but this is huge news and deserves to be in a place where everyone can see it, IMHO.

Well, not everybody... 5 guys. I am always of a view that big news demands the big forum, but I am also not in charge.
I will say that I am very surprised - I definitely hope things work out for him. It's going to be a few games for sure - just in time for the playoff push.
I've always loved Donovan's game and really liked him as a person. The sport is more fun with him on the pitch, that's for sure. I just wish this had happened in time for him to have made it to Yankee Stadium last month, but maybe he can visit in December

My guess is that he says he is coming back only for club ball and not for international duty - at least in the short term. That eliminates the awkward questions and controversies both for him and the USMNT as they go into the Hex.
While losing two years in the process. This makes the second time he's made a knee-jerk decision that he regretted. Possibly more if he still harbors any regrets over his time in Europe.
While we are on the subject, can anyone name Donovan's last goal for the national team? Give the opponent and score - bonus points for the person making the assist.

Yea really idiotic career moves on his part. Seems like he got bored and sick of commentating and watching others play.
What would be awkward regarding the MNT - he lost his spot before he retired so for him to even mention the MNT, or think he has a chance, would be delusional & narcissistic on his part.

What would be awkward would be all the fans and media asking constantly why he isn't being called up. I think that's pretty clear. My prediction is that Donovan will take the high road and rule it out - at least in the short term. If he doesn't - it's hardly vain and narcissistic.
Might as well go "Jordan" all the way and double his number to 20.
That's a really good question. Right now, there are all kinds of options because so many people are missing. In their lineup when everyone is healthy - as against us, for example - they've got Keane in front of Zardes, Gerrard and dos Santos. My guess is that he would eventually slot into the central spot with Gerrard sliding back where de Jong had been. But that's for later. He will almost certainly come off the bench for a while first.
EDIT - thinking about it some more, I forgot that Zardes is out for the season, so certainly Donovan could take the spot at LW.
