So wait, was he considered a DP in Miami? And due to their number fudging they had to move him to Argentina? So did we kinda sorta get a DP level signing?

Difficult to say. He was a DP based on promise and the transfer fee, I guess, but he was unproven at the time. He didn't do well in Miami (almost nobody did, except for Lewis Morgan) and then he was loaned back to the Argentine Primera, which produces great young players that get snatched by Europe in their teens or close to, but is overall not much better than MLS. So he may have DP potential but he's nowhere near a bona fide DP yet. Then again, we paid a lot for Medina straight from the Paraguayan 1st division, so this is much better than that and pretty inexpensive.

A little Internet sleuthing reveals the following.

Miami purchased Pellegrini for between $6-9 million in 2019.

His salary in 2020 was $780,000.

By putting him on waivers, Miami is essentially writing off the transfer fee, which is what made Pellegrini a DP. Assuming NYCFC is paying his full salary (the Club could be paying more or less), then Pellegrini is a TAM player. Plus, he's a player that could be sold at a high profit assuming he develops better here than he did in Miami.

He scored 1 goal in 15 appearances for Miami.

I hope we pay him more than 800k, he deserves it the way he was treated by Miami, he still has time to develop with us luckily.

I posted this elsewhere, but I'll put it here too. Apparently, the whole trouble with Inter Miami started with them having too many DPs.

Oops.

We may have just stolen a real bargain here.

How has he been so far? Between work and blackouts or having company etc. I literally don't think I've been able to watch a match since he's come on board. It sounds like people are pretty positive on him? Should he be starting? Fitness not there ?

he's not showing anything spectacular, but when he comes on, he is lively and has left everything on the pitch. which is great to see, especially since we kinda seem sluggish lately for any number of reasons.

i suspect he hasn't started cause of fitness and being newer to the squad. looking forward to seeing how he develops and adds to our attack.
