Eh. I'd try anything new. Give mix a try back there.

Mix 100% - I don't like AJ in that role at all. His attack rate is too high and never recovers against a counter. I was whining for Mix to play in that DM role all season. AJ is a nice player, but he's not a work in process. We know what we get with him in that position and it ain't good.

Wasn't he playing CB in that P.R. game?

What spot? AJ is probably going to be playing CB this year, not a spot that Mix would occupy.

If we want there to be no defensive cover and we trust the defense go with Mix. Otherwise sign a starting DM.

It all depends on Reyna. I've felt for a while that his job this year depends on the formation of the defense. The coach can only coach, for better or worst. It reyna's job to give him the talent. If we are as porous as we were last year, he'll be the first one out going into 2017 (which would be a shame cause I was hoping his son would be our first homegrown player......after the better part of a decade....)

Allen, Mena, Teixiera, Iraola is already (on paper) better than anything we had in the back last year. Get a certain Costa Rican LB in and the Defense will be in business.

I agree. I want Mattarita even more than Teixiera. This is a good unit...they just need reps and time together. Although Allen isn't a bad player, Mattarita is a much more exciting prospect.

We had 3 of those 4 last year. Add in Mattarita, sure it looks good on paper, but Fifa 16 predicts that a Pirlo, DV and Lamps led NYCFC wins the MLS Cup every year.

If the improved defense can handle it, fine. AJ couldn't do it and I think he had the potential to be more of DM than Mix. Mix wants to go forward. He isn't going to cover for Pirlo. Or a leaky defense.

Episode 2 of The View from 226 has my thoughts on the Mix vs. AJ dilemma and the midfield as a whole.

The key for me is who has the tactical discipline to be a real holder. We'll see if either can do it.

Mix actually said he prefers playing as a 6. I think he had a few creative plays on the USMNT and everyone penned him as a 10, but he's definitely more of a 6 or 8.
I think he can do it. Playing with Pirlo requires tremendous discipline from Mix, but the one place where he exceeded my expectations last year was in terms of his work rate and ball winning skills on the wing.

I guess I have noticed he has the ability to break up plays a few times on the USMNT, but it' hard for me to see him as a full time 6. We'll see what shakes out.
