MLS - May 13 - Charlotte (Away)

That was a really good, professional road performance.

We thank Kahlina for the gift, and we hung in really well. Charlotte is dreadful offensively.

Boys did a good job of killing off the game. Thankfully Agu’s miss was not fatal.

The trap on the. CLT goal that got called back was impressive. As a defender I always enjoy seeing a well drilled unit stepping up as one.

Nice to get a couple straight and glad the kids were able to finish it off.

The Apple announcers first wondered if it was too close to call but on replay laughed “no, he was 5 yards off.”

Just 4 shots all game. Yes, we took a lead at '8 and Charlotte only had 5 shots themselves, but still. That's weak. All it takes is 1 flukey Charlotte goal. NYC has not had double digit shots in 4 straight games, and has scored 4 goals total in those games. We're lucky to have 2 wins. NYC was shut out 2x in those 4 games, and has posted 2 shutouts itself. Fortunately those did not coincide or we likely drop more points.

I criticize Ojeda for only scoring (and mostly even only shooting) on fast breaks, but he does get more fast break opportunities with no defenders in front of him than any NYC player outside of Martinez, probably all time.

Cavallo had 2 lengthy discourses with linesmen over a corner/goal kick call.

NYC currently has a slightly higher road PPG (1.4) than home (1.375).

Both the Apple and FS1-via-YTTV streams were a good 25 seconds behind live, as contrasted with the real time game update on the Apple Sports app. There's always a lag but this seemed longer than usual.

Yeah, happy to win, but this did not feel like a strong performance. We had more of the ball than the weekend, but almost none of the attacking dynamism. Ojeada or Wolff scoring certainly would have made things feel better, but not changed the underlying.

I think all the young forwards who came on at the end acquitted themselves well though, which is nice.

Good road win, not a thrilling performance but better than losing.

Nice to see Pascal make similar substitutions to the Cincy game but the team not capitulate. Good on the kids.

Cavallo should keep his place in the team.

I ws just thinking about how you have to always be on guard for the temptation to just focus on results. Whether you rely mostly on eye-tests or stats, it's always easy to let a W hide flaws, for a good defense to outshine a bad offense, and for some snazzy finishing to paper over a failure to create many chances. I think most people here on the forum mostly avoid this trap, but for me at least it's a constant effort.

Yes, it’s always essential to drain as much joy as we can from a victory.

I'm late responding to this, but I think I owe myself some defense on this account.

Nobody in the 2021 regular season, except maybe Soup, was as adamant as I was that NYCFC was among the very best teams in the league, severely hard done by bad luck and undeserved results. We outplayed everyone even during much of the second half season slump and nobody wanted to hear it. In very different circumstances I made the same directional point in 2023. NYCFC was not good by any means, but it was not nearly as bad as its record, and again few believed me. But IMO we probably played well enough to be in the 8-9 play-in game.

This week we were fortunate to win the Charlotte game and all the examples when I made my point related to that game. But on balance, yes: you win some you don't deserve and you drop points you deserve to have won.
