Have seen several articles, all refer to a Yahoo piece by Kristian Dyer. According to Dyer's source, the league would increase allocation money and the number of international slots. Discussion is taking place at committee level (whatever that means).

"This new proposal would give more versatility to an expansion team instead of having to select players from the proverbial scrap heap."

Playing devils advocate wonder who the drivers of this idea may be ?

I know for a true fact that Sheikh Mansour was *so* pissed at our initial player choices he told his buddy who's about to buy an MLS franchise to demand a rule change before he plunked down his money.

True story. Honest.

Not sure if your joking or not but he's certainly got friends in high places for sure.
Wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see some mls rule changes next season

I wouldn't be surprised either way. But why would it be more likely driven by CFG than, as commentators have pointed out, by a) the cash infusion to MLS over the last few years, rendering the draft less of a necessary evil to roster building and b) teams who are trying to compete in CONCACAF champions league who don't want to lose roster depth

i must of misread the article, i thought the extra international spots and money would go to the expansion team to be able to obtain more players not actually give more spots and money to everyone.

i still dont know how and where would the new teams get players from? there arent many players that are "free agents" and not many teams will trade for a future draft pick.

unless of course they raid the NASL and take many of their players.

The anonymous quote in the yahoo article doesn't specify.

The way I understood it would be that existing teams might be willing to trade existing players for allocation money (which the upcoming expansion teams would receive more of than past expansion teams) rather than having expansion teams rummaging through the "scrap heap." And depending on whether only the expansion teams got increased international slots (to me that seems unlikely) or slots were expanded for all teams, I suppose teams could also trade for extra international spots. Galaxy traded one to us in exchange for allocation money

Edit: but all of this is supposition based on a single sentence quoted to an anonymous source, so take it with a grain of salt

Yeah that's what I read, all these changes in allocation funds and international slots was just for expansion teams. The idea that instead of getting cast offs in the expansion draft, expansion teams would use new funds/slots as trade bait to get players they actually want. For example we could have used them to get Beckerman who we wanted as opposed to Grabavoy who we settled for in expansion draft.

That makes sense. I guess if they expanded it to all teams there wouldn't really be an incentive for existing teams to make trades to the expansion teams
