Number of NYCFC fans in NYC

I know that it is very difficult to answer to this my question, but I have this curiosity : What could be the number ( approximate, of course ) of the NYCFC fans ONLY in NYC ( 8,500,000 inhabitants ) ?

The best way of figuring our a good range of NYCFC fans in NYC would be looking at the club's social media networks and if there is a search capacity to view numbers by location of users.

I'd put the number somewhere between 100K-300K.

What counts as a fan?
  • going to games?
  • what if you go occasionally because your friend takes you but otherwise don't much care?
  • what if you follow big european soccer or Mexican soccer and don't care much about MLS but to the extent you do, you like to look at the table and see NYC in first.
Or any of a dozen variants or more? You don't have to answer all those specifically but at least indicate if you mean a broad definition of fan or something narrower.

I'm not sure socail media followers means much. For example, Yankees have 1.2mm but lots more fans than that. Mets have fewer than half as many followers as the Yankees but more than half their fanbase. Rangers have more followers than the Mets, which ridiculous if you think it's a reflection of their fan populaitons. Knicks have most in the city, more than Yanks or Giants which is also kind of nuts.

To attempt an answer, for a broad definition of fan I would guess 500-750k NYCFC fans total with maybe 75-80% in the city, but that's definitely a WAG.

Anyone know what our average TV audience is for our matches? That'd probably be a good indicator.

There's a couple of potential problems with that though. Not sure we could get that info for only New York City proper. Also not sure how much a TV audience would generally "rotate" each week (i.e., how would we know if it's the same 100,000 people watching the matches or if double that amount watch half the matches, for example).

How many people are watching the match at each home/bar??? Impossible to ascertain.

Not NYC specific, but a funny story about a "non-fan" that I ran into at a gas station on Long Island...

Guy was probably late 50's - a Turkish guy wearing an Ireland national team jersey with the name "Turk" on the back. He said when he came here he couldn't find enough Turks to play with so he started hanging out with the Irish guys. We talked about euros, Fener/Besiktas/Gala, etc, and then, like the true fan I am, I asked him if he's checked out NYCFC yet. He smiled and said (verbatim) "Eh a little, but I'm not interested in those old geriatric fucks who need canes to get up and down the field!"

I wonder how many NY soccer fans like him had a similar take on the club signing our DPs? Either way, he's the kind of guy you'd love to have a beer with. Funny as hell.

To me, that guy is a fair-weather fan.....

I'd bet that that reaction has nothing to do with NYCFC's DPs specifically, but is down to this guy's general perception of MLS as a retirement league.

Eh, it's tough taken out of context. He was really like 75% joking, but it is a fact that he's a die hard fan of the sport living in NY who has barely taken notice of the team. I guess my point is there's still a lot of fans right here (who aren't RB fans or followers of MLS) to be had.

I think that's more what he was going for. Hopefully over the next few years we see some younger DPs come in. Villalba at Atlanta is a good start.

Totally agree. I tried MLS in 1996 and gave up after a few matches and only watched international. Got hooked on MLS in 2015. Still working on my brother and a few buddies.
