Hey Folks ...

How about a thread about records. Yup, I'm one of those people. I live in the neighborhood formerly known as Mott Haven/Port Morris now dubbed the Piano District by the likes of Kendall Jenner, which means My neighborhood will soon be called PI DI. I'm one of those people who listens to records. So annoying, I'm also white, ride a bike, and am vegan. So whatever.

That being said I know there is a rich and diverse load of musical interests on here. So what about folks with music interests that lend themselves to the vinyl variety?

Anyone have favorite record shops, find something totally amazing in a random store? Score something awesome at a good will? You get the idea. Let's talk about those dusty nasty amazing things!

I collected when I was younger, strictly metal. Made a bunch of moves in my early-mid 20's and managed to lose track of my (albeit small) collection.

I've finally gotten to a place where I can start building the collection again. I haven't purchased a turntable or system yet (come on tax returns!) but I've been gradually picking up records over the past couple months.

Mostly metal but there's some prog (Kansas...and I'm on the hunt for Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson and Camel) and a couple classical - Dvorak No 9, Tchaikovsky No 5. I'm not against buying other styles of music, but there's probably a hundred or so albums that are on my *essential list* at the moment.

Generation Records in the Village and Darkside Records in Poughkeepsie are great for underground / extreme metal. There's also a dozen or so online vendors that I routinely check.

Still have most my original Ramones albums from the 70's and my mom handed me a few 70's imports recently found in a closet. My dad is a big jazz guy and has thousands of old albums.
In the suburbs tag sales seem to be the best deals I have found on vinyl.

As I was thinking about where I have found some amazing purchases, I was reminded of the WFMU Record Fair. Next one is Fri April 29 - Sun May 1, 2016. I haven't been for several years because I always forget to calendar it

This is more difficult to answer than I would have expected.
The only way to properly answer is by giving Top 3's of various different categories. It should provide a broad enough spectrum of essential albums.

Summoning - Stronghold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuoR8wEW0Bo
Obsequaie - Aria of Vernal Tombs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaFIDnsWCQQ

The majority of the albums above are pretty approachable for anyone with a modest interest (and open mind) to extreme metal. "True" Black Metal is a bit more of an acquired taste as well as Summoning, which I've included in Atmospheric BM. The albums with an (*)asterisk would probably be included in my Top 25 metal albums of all-time.
