Why? As far as I could tell, most people thought it was best to not try to reinvent the wheel and have the group fold into the forums here. Apparently it was announced at the meeting that they are starting their own forum.

SMH.

What are your thoughts on this? I'm a TR member and this move just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm assuming it's a closed forum i.e. only TR members.

I don't mind (not TR). They have stuff they want to discuss away from the public, including non-TR NYCFC fans and other fans. This is an open forum, so it's natural they would create their own forum to discuss sensitive TR business.

I do hope they still come over here to talk general stuff about the team.

Well on the issue of moving the discussion out of FB and into a proper forum, that's definitely a good move. Whether they should have their own forum or a subsection here is trickier. They probably want to keep control of membership and letting people in to post in their forum. I don't know if this forum software can set up subgroups: if it cannot do so then they had little choice. If this software can then it's mostly a question of shared control with our forum mods. I'm not too worked up either way.

You should ask Chance @NYisBLUE and Brian @BToto920, maybe they need to have there own close board for something, and I don't think @NYCFC_Dan will allow that, nor should he have to for TR or the other SGs. So this is cool, I don't have a problem with that.

TR will definitely have private matters they want to discuss internally. Which makes perfect sense. They have a closed tifo group on Facebook, but it's so hard to have a current and updated conversation on FB. Makes a lot more sense to discuss those kinds of things in a forum format.

I haven't heard this. However we have been more than willing to work with Third Rail to give them a private, members only space here, free of charge. All was good and then a wall was put up on their end. This will only serve to create a divide between Third Rail and members of the forum as you will see TR members slowly moving away from the forum.

I don't think Dan had any issue with them (us) having a locked forum. Every forum I've ever used does it. I'm not worked up about it but I'm closely watching the decisions that they are making looking to see what the real objective is.

I thought it was a good idea for this forum to help TR and TR to help this forum.

I offered a locked and private forum. It's something we could easily do. Giving their members private access. We do it already for an SG. That's what we are here for. Give everyone a home.
It would cut costs for them entirely. Rather than having to pay monthly hosting now and additional fees for whatever platform they choose.
I've told them from the start that FB is not the way to go. As an SG you need to build on discussions and FB doesn't allow that as everything sinks and there is no way to moderate good discussions from bad. Even if a particular topic gets 100 replies it'll just sink to the bottom and eventually be forgotten or have to be repeated.

I am a fan of the move. The facebook group was obviously not a long term solution. I like these forums as much as someone could like forums but there are advantages to hosting members-only forum on the Third Rail website. The TR would have more creative control and practical control. Not to mention it would mean it would be another reason to use the website and could drive traffic there.

Although honestly I don't think it is a big deal either way. The great news is that the facebook group will not be the primary place of discussion.

Well they are scrapping facebook which is fantastic. That is the main takeaway. I see the benefits of starting their own forums as I mentioned above but like I said there I don't think the difference between that and having a private forum here is too big.

they dont want to be associated with the #geeksquad

Dan touched on the meat of my concerns. If the TR keeps growing... and members use the forums for info... which is traffic to the website... and that traffic is monetized... and we're already paying members... what is that money for? Let's say the first response is maintaining the forums. (server costs, design costs, hosting, etc.) Ok, ad dollars should certainly amount to significantly more than that costs. What is that money for?

Was this voted on at the meeting?

It's possible it was.

Oh, then this is just petty BS. Aggravating that TR doesn't want to work with all NYCFC to help the club grow.
