Forum Folks I'd like to have a beer with

:)

Like I said, I love this stuff. Group dynamics is one of the most fascinating things in the world to me.

You may have seen it, but I found the FIRO-B model to be really interesting when I did it. It helps you to understand how you react in group situations based on your needs and the situation. It was originally developed by the US Navy to ensure that they put the correct mix of personalities in submarines who would not go ape-shit on each other. (They probably didn't use the phrase ape-shit in their documentation though). So to apply this to the Beer Invite List, Forum Folks with a high wanted inclusion would have been disappointed to be left off the Beer Invite List. However, people with Low WI = zero F's given.

For discussion purposes following the beer gathering I'd like to have a recap on whether or not the first beer snob to order an IPA triggered others to do the same for the sake of not being left out. Despite the majority thinking they taste like ass.

This makes me smile. I know of it and have administered it many times. In fact, the son of the creator of the FIRO is a good friend of mine. It is through him and his wife who used to work for me that I originally learned about this model of group development. And to this day I still think it is the best model I know of for understanding group development and dynamics.

And FWIW, while I suspect I'm lower now, last time I took it I scored a 9 on need to be included.

My buddy was an officer on a sub.... They used the term ape-shit.

if anyone orders wine, they can fuck right off!

Shit. The only thing I like better than my IPAs is a good bottle of wine. Even have a collection and everything.

I was drinking IPA's since before it was cool to drink IPA's (alrigh alrigh alriigh.) And i'm far from a beer snob, one of my go-to's is actually Miller Lite. Anyway, IPA's are the shit. You've offended me and made me feel like the douchy snob of the group. Now i'll never drink and IPA again so I can fit in!

Is there a name for the logical fallacy where you assume that people who like something you don't like are putting on airs rather than acting out their genuine preferences?

... I was joking... Going off the convo earlier about group mentality.
I drink IPA's. I was at a local bar last night and usually go there 2-3 times a week.

Oops, sorry bout that. The funny thing is I am extremely susceptible to group mentality myself - if the three people before me order bud or coors or what have you I'd follow suit rather than appear to buck the trend. So that first person to get the IPA would be offering sweet relief rather than a challenge. When I go to my local bars with lousy beer selection I usually get the Sam Adams on tap rather than ask the bartender to bend down to get the bottles of Lagunitas that have probably been languishing for months.

I'm the same way with ordering beers. But if I go to a restaurant and someone orders the dish I was thinking about ordering, I end up going with something different, haha
