Was in the air for all but the last 5 minutes of this one but from what I've read it was tactics and shit defending?

Lots to discuss the next 2 weeks

It looked like lack of composure. Not finishing chances and every member of the forum probably could have had a free header in the box the way the defense looks. This game brings us back down to earth and over the next two weeks look at the squad and think can we compete for the shield or the cup with that back line. Up front we look great just didn't finish tonight and dropped massive points to a team in 8th. Sorry Rant over lets bounce back in two weeks and go on another run.

Also horrible (read this as just tonight or,
If you're of my mind, all the time):
TPFKAU
CBA (new nickname for Sweat, as in "can't be arsed" to)
Sitch
Sal
Brillant (just because his +/- is like -10 it seems)

Honorable mentions for one-off shitlist:
Harrison's shots
Villa's shots
Whomever picked our shoes
Vieira subs

After giving up the early goal both our forward line and our midfielders panicked and spent most of the first half with poor positional discipline. Villa felt compelled, either with cause or without, to drop too deep too often to pick up the ball, and the rest of our offense just wasn't where they needed to be to run our attacking patterns. We played excellent keepaway, but couldn't translate our possession dominance into goals despite denying VAN a good look at our own goal for 42 minutes.

Losing Yangel early in the second half was a huge blow, and given that Maxi was ultimately subbed on anyway the clear move should have been to bring him on then instead of Brilliant. Brilliant coming on caused a confusing defensive midfield shuffle for far too long, and when Maxi *did* ultimately come on it looked like he could be a spark to ignite a fire, but by that point he was having to partner with Lopez and, well, the results speak for themselves.

Obviously Jack had an off night from a shooting perspective.

Wallace was hugely missed.

Vieira subbing in Brillant way way to early, if at all. Harrison missing two clear chances. The referee having a shit night. And that terrible god damn video director that works for TSN that cares more about close ups than the actual game. I think it's best if I take a break from everything MLS and NYCFC online until the Monday before TFC.

Nobody's ranted about the turf yet, so here goes:

That turf is a fucking disgrace to this league. It pretty much caused the first goal - Ring goes for the tackle and gets caught up in the turf, and players were slipping all night (Chanot especially). There was one other big chance where we got caught in the turf but it led to nothing.

Players were apprehensive all night. Now maybe they didn't have the right shoes or spikes or whatever, but it wasn't just footing, the bounces were weird, etc. And it might have caused us to lose Herrera as well (was it his hamstring from getting caught in the turf?)

Take it away Didier:

From the pre-match thread:
  • So many missed chances. The one reason I'm not totally depressed right now.
  • Classic Vieira on the Herrera sub meant that we lost midfield and didn't have a sub for Tommy when he ran out of steam. I love Paddy but his game time decisions are horrible. Maybe this is why we win every time he is suspended.
  • Pirlo had an immaculate game. Fuck the haters. If Maxi had come on instead of Brillant, we could have put our foot on Vancouver's neck and ended the game.
Also Callens is turning into a real leader at the back. Johansen was scary but not really at fault for the goals.

Ok, about the Herrera injury:

First, Herrera says he can't continue and walks off the field. NYCFC now plays with 10 men. Vancouver plays something like 3-4 minutes of solid possession - basically bringing them back into the game - while NYCFC waits for the sub. At one point Lurch has the ball and even punts it back into play. Get your damn replacement player in!

And then, finally, the ball goes out for a corner (or was it a sideline throw deep in our end?) I believe, finally making the switch...but the last thing you want to do is switch up a back line on a set piece that you are defending! Come on! Ball goes back into play, boom, goal, 2-2. Game completely flips on its head.

And that is before the back line juggling. I had no idea at the end who was playing what...for example, on the final Vancouver goal, Sweat loses the ball and instead of running down the sideline to press his man (isn't that the job of the outside back?) he leisurely jogs back, giving acres of space to pick out the cross. Brilliant and Chanot then both mark the same guy and no one is on the back post, boom, easy finish and bye bye point.

This loss is completely on PV. It can't be that you lose one guy in the MF and your entire game plan goes to shit. Happened in the Open Cup and now again. Bring in Lopez for Herrera and then swap out Pirlo for Maxi because you can't play Pirlo w/out both of Herrera and Ring providing cover. Don't bring in a CB to destabilize your back line and move your best CB out of position.

But that's ok, PV. We can enjoy having to play an extra play-in game because NYCFC piss away points with bad finishing, gifting goals to the opposition, and awful substitutions. Just better hope that no one gets injured in a playoff game.

On Pirlo, I thought he had a shaky start (up until about the first 25 minutes or so) but was much better after that. He does like to switch the ball diagonally which adds a new element and with Herrera/Ring he's not a liability defensively. He also had a nice set piece which led to the goal.

He needs to put that goal away though in the 70th minute.

Yeah. Except I think I'd bring Maxi in. Lopez seems like more of an enforcer than Maxi because he's just definitely not a baller. But I think Maxi hustles just as hard. I really wish Joe and Joy called out PV on the sub. Total headslapper.
