Interesting article but this is not really how RB has played
The article discusses how the 3-6-1 has the flexibility to morph into a 3331, etc., which sounds kind of like what the RB have been using? Though, I haven't seen much of the RB run live, and the various sources seem somewhat inconsistent as to what they are actually doing. In any event, I won't pass on an opportunity to pass along a formation porn article!

We kicked the shit out of crappy teams by pushing 7 guys forward, I guess our formation is so amazing no one can beat it. Somehow we've "locked down the wings" with 2 wide players, so everyone "has to" come through the middle where we have all our players. Marsch is a genius. Until Herrera puts Adams back in time out and Ring shuts down overrated pornstache and their only good player never sees the ball.

Can't wait to see Felips bawling again on Sunday and Muyl whining with the slowest healing thumb injury of all time. Excited to see Robles shouting at his cutting edge three man back line as Villa and Maxi carve them up.

I always change a 3 man back line to 5 man in my head, since no one plays without fullbacks. Unless a team is willing to allow a winger to get into the corner and leave one of the CBs to defend them, its not functionally a three man back line. So as with all "3 man back lines" its really 3 CBs and 2 FBs. that's a 5 man back line whether you want them to push up or not. so they are playing a 5131, with a CDM, LAM, CAM and RAM, plus BWP. The question is can your wide attacking MFs drop back to get the ball through midfield? I don't think htey have the horses for that without Dax. Felipe and Adams arent good enough to beat our midfield. kljestan has to drop and BWP is starved.

I don;t think Marsch is totally dumb, so I think you will see they won't try to play like that against us.

Reading it was more like an S&M article.... interesting but really painful to digest

So Yangel Herrera served his one game suspension for a red card. The second yellow counts as a red but not a yellow in the disciplinary report so he currently has 4 yellow cards and is 1 away from suspension. 5 clean games merit a reduction of one.

Yeah this is how I see it:

Really the only difference between 3 ATB and 5 ATB is how much you let the wingbacks overlap like how we can go from a 433 to 451 very easily.

No matter what we want, we are going to have backups playing at CB, LB and LW and the same issue at RB we've had all year. No escaping it.
Technically, Sweat is the starter at LB and has been most of the season. Even when Mata came back from injury, Sweat got the nod.

Pitchside next to NYCFC bench have dropped to $392 inclusive of fees.

Less than 500 on Stubhub overall. On Ticketmaster only multiple seats in Legends, behind home plate, and Delta.

Maybe our only +30k game of the season. I think the weather is supposed to be amazing on Sunday. AccuWeather shows 78 at kick off, 0% chance of precip, and low humidity!

On Dark Sky I'm seeing 77 degrees at 6 PM kickoff, 0% chance of precipitation, 46% humidity and overcast moving to 53% humidity at mostly cloud by 8 PM. 8 mph winds to the east. 1 on the UV index.

Yeah but Mata was still working towards full fitness. No doubt that if he is fully fit, Sweat is back on the bench.

Ha! Not sure I will even give you "technically correct" on that one.

However, your point does reveal some interesting information.

Matarrita started the first 6 games at left back. Since then, Sweat has started 14 of 15 games while Matarrita has mostly been unavailable due to injuries and national team duty.

Matarrita has been available for 3 games since he first sat for an injury.
  • In our 2-1 win over Philadelphia, he came off the bench, but it was for Camargo at LW.
  • In our 2-0 win over the Red Fools three weeks later, he again came off the bench, again at LW, this time for Wallace.
  • In our 3-1 win over Minnesota, Matarrita started at LB before being subbed out early with a broken foot; Sweat started at RB.
The interesting observation is that when Matarrita was coming off the bench as he returned to fitness, he came on at LW, not LB. Plus, while he started at LB in his last game (Minnesota), that was the game where Allen and White were punished for not showing up on time. So, it's not clear who Patrick would have started at LB. Indeed, I seem to recall that there was some talk that Matarrita would start over Wallace at LW before the shakeup.

So, I think it is possible that with a fully healthy lineup, Sweat would get some starts at LB with Matarrita ahead on the wing. That said, I do think that Matarrita would have kept the job at LB without the injuries, and I think ultimately the first choice lineup will be Matarrita and Wallace on the left side, assuming we can ever get both of them healthy.

As an aside, the only other guy to start at LB for us this season is RJ Allen against RSL in that ridiculous lineup that Coach V used to throw an easy game.

Yes, true (fitness), but I think Mata's best position may be advanced as a winger. He's deadly on the attack 1v1, and Sweat has made it possible to use Mata as a first sub off he bench to hit tired defenders.
