NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

Hopefully not a terribly bad question. What are the chances/legalese that a player brought up in our academy goes off to play in another league, that is not the MLS, but not European either. Be it Brazilian, Mexican, Argentinian etc. I know we haven't seen anything to suggest it, I was just wondering where academy kids go if not to their respective first team?

Sure - has happened to LA Galaxy. That's how Paul Arriola ended up in Mexico and why DC United had to pay the LA Galaxy a fee to acquire his rights.
Except that Arriola was never technically in LA's system (he sure didn't satisfy the time req) but MLS rules being what they are, LA was able to claim him and screw over D.C.
Hour long... need to watch it but not at this very moment.
Guess I'll be doing some on the ground scouting at Stanford in the coming years.
We're trying to cover them more but it's not exactly easy unless we have someone there. Not to mention, we're not quite sure where to draw the line on privacy given that yes they're in the academy but they're also minors.

Ideally it'll turn into a monthly or even weekly report.
I'm no legal eagle, but if you have any concerns about covering minors, use college football/basketball as a guide since they have recruiting companies analyzing kids from 8th/9th grade on up.
I'm sure legally it's fine, but personally we think it's best to leave them out of it. They're kids after all, unless they're national team capped and their name is already out there, we figured it's best to not scrutinize them or put their names out there to a large audience.
College recruiting is the most cancerous aspect of college sports polluting youth sports.
This is probably the most important chalk talk in NYCFC House that we've seen. I watched the entire thing and the most important quote is at the end. With our connection to Manchester City, NYCFC and Man City are having discussion to send NYCFC academy players to Man City for the following:
- Training sessions during winter to see the quality of NYCFC academy players compared to Man City academy players
- Preseason training in Manchester
- Staying permanently in Manchester
Yeah, we may lost out on Gio Reyna (and more importantly the GAM for his sale) before he even signs on the dotted line for NYCFC.
Seems unlikely, i think this is for the far future, moreso than next 2 or so years.
I have no idea how our academy teams will stack up to MCFC's, but what happens if we consistently send teams over and they not just hold their own, but excel compared to their distant cousins? And I'm not talking about individuals (because the Gio's will always stand out) but rather the composition of each team as a whole 11/18/24. Which org's kids are grasping the concepts better/faster?
