Columbus 2nd Leg ECS - Postmatch

I'm not on that "Maxi isn't worthy" bandwagon. He wasn't brought in to score goals, his job was to create them. Not his fault the team couldn't convert a lot of the chances he created. With the right DP we could see even more production from him next year.
Doesn’t mean he can be excused for missing sitters, though. As I said before, we only got where we were because of his contributions. We only got where we did because of his limitations, too.

Nope. Stop lying to yourself. There was no circumstance where Pirlo made sense. He has less goals than Brillant and hasn’t had an assist in a dog’s decade.
Fair enough; I obviously don't think it was a good idea, but if I have to invent a justification for PV sending him on other than as a really inappropriate swan song, that's all I could come up with.

I was amazed at all the people cheering for Pirlo when he came on. I wanted to shout out DON'T YOU SEE, THIS IS A DISASTER!, but I was too jaw-dropped to pull it together.

Happy that Ben played so well in the middle. Gives you a lot of confidence going forward. We have some wiggle room for next year, and I think we could call ourselves pretty deep in 18. But Vieira has to learn that when we're pressing forward it doesn't matter half a turd if someone can or cannot defend. Lewis should have been on in the 65th. This isn't the Prem where you can call on Peter Crouch in the last 10 and loft him balls. Okoli hasn't made a meaningful, positive touch on the ball in 5 months. In theory, bringing on a target striker is fine, but we haven't played with one (or a good one) all year? I just don't understand him at all. They pushed us outside and we have players to really hurt them out there. Ack.

Driving in I remembered last year that on the same drive I had hope down 2-0, which died almost as soon as the game started. I had no hope today driving it.
But then we scored early enough, and looked like we wouldn’t give anything up.
We played well. Against all hope, we had a chance over the last 30 minutes. So it was a better day than expected.

I'm going to be the contrarian here because, well, someone has to be.

I don't hate how long Vieira waited with the subs. The way the XI were playing, I can understand why he didn't want to change things up.

I was a little upset with the Pirlo sub, but let's be honest, we needed someone with the ability to thread passes -- he's that guy. He didn't do it today, and obviously it's probably a mistake to bring him in rusty in that moment after not playing for so long, but I absolutely understand what Vieira was thinking there -- it's not the worst sub he's made all year.

So unlucky not to get that third goal, really thought it was coming. This team finished second in MLS this regular season, and obviously peaked too early, but some improvements here and there should really make things interesting next year. Can't wait -- we're only four months away.

COME ON NEW YORK

Zach Steffen sold his soul to the soccer gods. Never seen a goalie luck out due to the post more than him.

In the 3 playoff games, opponents have hit the post FIVE times. Change one of those to a goal and CLB is eliminated. Definition of getting luck at the right time.

Honestly #VieriaOut, the guys did a good job for the most part today they got the 2 goals needed to stand a chance. But we had like 35 mins to score one aka starting putting in fresh offensive legs *cough* *cough* our best offensive player on the bench Lewis. Lewis should have been in before the 65 minute to give the offense more of a spark. But instead Vieria waits till the 80th minute to give Okoli who hasn’t done shit the whole season and then FREAKING PIRLO before Lewis.

Pirlo coming was Vieria waving the white flag he didn’t care anymore he just wanted a send off for him. Pirlo doesn’t do anything for our offense. It’s disgraceful how Lewis was overlooked and subbed in at the 91st minute, he had no time.

We lost today cause of Vieria and his horrible subs, should get the boot for costing us this series cause yes Callens didn’t help but we had to only score one more today to advance. Our season was down to the last 30 mins today everything else was irrelevant.

So fucking what if the 11 played great. By the time we subbed Okoli in (I understand why it happened so I don't care that he was the first sub) Columbus already had 2 fresh players running at a team with no subs. That is a recipe for disaster.

Cousin Jason, you are right.

There is no excuse. I have no idea what PV was thinking waiting so late and making Okoli the first sub. Super weird. Super dumb.

The sub of Pirlo for Struna was to punish the guy who had scored the only goal from the run of play, and sent the best crosses throughout the match. Let's just replace him with the guy who has made the overhit long ball a fixture of our offense. Made total PV sense. And of course Rodney had his best game since the last time he had Mata by his side. And of course Lewis did great in his 5 minute cameo. I wasn't in the Vieira Out camp before, but noticing how the obvious and predictable solution of bringing Mata and Struna in clearly revives our offense has me wondering if PV isn't really just inept. If he has brought Shelton in, that would have tipped the balance.

Because if the team is looking dangerous, let them try to win it. Maybe he did wait too long, but I don't think we failed to win because of the late subs, I think we failed to win because the hole was too big to climb out of.

Idk if anyone mentioned it yet, but SJ had the best save of his season today going to his left, upper corner. Surreal athleticism. Transcended his own ability. Watching him sometimes reminds me of watching Porzingis.
That was an amazing save that no one anywhere has a right to make. Really should be the save of the year across the league. Meram hit it perfectly.

A non-game comment.

There was a mess up during the moment of silence and national anthem. The singer began the anthem before the PA announcer said thank you, or even said thank you. It was very, very odd.

On TV, you see them showing the firefighters while she begins signing and they look confused and begin to salute. Really, really odd.

I noticed this too and everyone in our section was confused by it.
