Red Bulls - Postmatch

What I noticed very clearly for most of the match was that, probably because Villa tends to drift left, all of our attacking build-up (however little of it there was) was passing through the left side, meaning through Sweat. There were many instances of Tinny all by himself in acres of space making a run, then stopping and waving his arms on the other side of the pitch and going unnoticed. And since the RB were also attacking mostly on that side, the heat map must have been crazy. Also, one defect we have even when we play well, but that gets more pronounced when we play like crap, is our players obsession with needlessly passing the ball to a surrounded Villa when there are much better options out there, other players completely open or making a run into space. It may sound like heresy, but I think Villa's absence may make his teammates better or at least more imaginative.

In the matches he was hurt, the team spread the ball around nicely to multiple players in multiple areas when building the attack.

It wasn’t just Tinner putting his hands up but others making runs and the field was rarely switched - and when it was the process was usually slowly via multiple short passes rather than a quick long cross or through ball - gave RB a chance to slide and defend.

I don't agree with taking the armband off of Villa. that wouldn't do want good. he's gone after this year anyway (most likely). Either Ring or Chanot will get it next year anyway.

Looking again at the "flick on" - how much of the mistake on that play is Villa's decision to play it or his execution, and how much is on Maxi for getting beaten to the ball by Tyler Adams?

Holy hell, you can’t place blame on Maxi for not anticipating a trick flick from Villa. Instead of trying to find a different scapegoat, notice that Medina is wide open with nobody within 20m, and Villa could have easily played a safe pass to the outside and sent Medina to the races rather than turning his back to Maxi to play a no-look flick.

Yup, if Villa gets that ball to Maxi, Maxi can the easily switch the field and Medina is off to the races.

You know what beats that press? Making 3-4 intelligent passes and scoring a goal.

Why get the ball to Maxi when he can pass directly to Medina? He had the room to two-touch it while facing Medina.

Its hard to tell from that angle how Villa was facing. Could he really have turned that fast and played an accurate ball to Medina in space?

I think maybe Maxi could have gotten there, but it is tough for him to anticipate it. I also think the flick from Villa could have been better.

I just enlarged the video on my phone and Villa is definitely facing Berget with his back to Maxi. And considering how adept Villa is at receiving the ball at the top of the box and creating space for a second/third touch, I’d be very surprised if he couldn’t do it there when the CB is a few meters behind him - Villa is at one side of the mowed grass and the CB is at the other side.

Well yeah, that's what I'm saying. Based on that video, I can't tell if there really is an easy pass from Villa to Medina there based on how he's facing.

Right, I see what your saying, but the gap between him and the defender, a full patch of grass, is plenty of room for him to trap/turn/pass to Medina. Maybe not everybody on the team is quick enough to do it, but Villa would be the top of my list of players with fast feet. We’re dealing with a guy faster than this:

Yeah and returning to Ring's point, even just maintaining possession is a win when your team is under a lot of pressure, especially at the start of the game. Whether he was able to find Medina or Maxi or Berget or not. And I think the point stands whether that was Ring's intention or not.
