Is it possible they just hadn’t filed a work permit because they were still deciding who to hire? Or is that just me being naive and optimistic?
Definitely possible. When I say "best guess" I definitely mean I don't know. Could be another candidate turned them down and Dome was a late sub. Could be Dome took a long time to decide like the response just ahead of me noted. Could be many things. My "best guess" mostly just means we know they have a penchant for secrecy while we don't know if there was another candidate, or if Dome was reluctant, or anything else. Moreover, the penchant for secrecy is the reason we don't know if there was another candidate, or if Dome was reluctant, or anything else. So there's a bit of elegance and poetic justice to assigning blame to the secrecy thing.

Put it to you this way, initial rumors started on/around April 20th - that’s three two months ago. If CFG’s braintrust did not start an action plan that very moment to weed pontential replacements down to a feasible short list, then they committed malpractice. Three Two months. It’s only been public knowledge for the last month, and by public I mean two weeks of PV being gone and the previous two weeks of Nice saying it was done through leaks to the press, but frankly there were public rumors from Nice that it was done well before that.

I’d venture CFG has had a solid 6 weeks of definitive notice that they were losing their manager and should have been in full panic mode talking to their short list of replacements. Either that was the case and no replacement was willing to accept, or they waited to fill thinking they could sway PV. If the second scenario was the case, then they are truly naive and value their company culture more than they should, because PV was always going to fly the coop. They have once again fcked over NYCFC with another failed roll-out, screwed up the PR for it, and are confirming they haven’t a clue how to run a proper business/sports model in the US market for the American consumer.

We have two weeks until the next RB derby. Will we have a manager by then? That’s RB match is the start of 3games/7Days. All home. This could get ugly really fast.

I just feel like it’s somewhere in the middle. I find it a little hard to believe they “haven’t a clue.” That’s not to say they didn’t mess some of this up. But there are so many moving parts involved to signing a new coach and we know so little about what was going on behind the scenes that I find it so negative to blame everything on CFG fucking it up.

*Admittedly I know that I probably have a less negative view of CFG to start with because I am not a STH

There are a LOT of moving parts which is why a team that sets their sights on a foreign coach cannot wait or waste any time in the process, because the biggest hurdle is the last, getting a work permit. There is an avenue for foreign workers to get expedited permits, don’t remember the name of it, but in a nutshell it is for experts/geniuses within each field. Not sure that Dome will qualify for it with his resume as an assistant (whereas Tata would).

Hell, CFG hasn’t even had a proper interview of the coach for supporters. Or regular updates on the progress of his staff (who won’t get visas any time soon either).

To be completely candid, I was absolutely paggered in Milan when I wrote that post, but I´m game for attempting to back it up.

Come on.

I completely agree that pointing out specific reasons helps make things happen quicker. I think it´s the aforementioned shitty tone that invalidates your statement about rationality. I´m not convinced that people are either 100% rational or non-rational - most people have the ability to be rational, but quickly lose that ability when confronted with vitriol and tend to respond in kind. I think these things tend to happen quicker when the people one is dealing with are able to remain rational because they´re not contending with the fight or flight response brought on by verbal barrage.

Not a bad list. I´d ideally go a step further and phrase it in terms of observations and ask questions instead of inferring to fill in the gap between observation and theory. That would feel a lot more feasible if the club was better at creating an atmosphere of dialogue and transparency with their fans. And yeah, in the vacuum of that, I think it´s really tempting to lash out. It happens.
I like to lash out on the board. It’s my trust tree.

They may have a clue, but their execution sucks... at almost everything. As an observer, this is one of the worst run organizations I have ever seen. Everything seems to be thrown together at the last minute, very poorly communicated and done on an ad hoc basis.

Maybe I’m way off base, but when STH start placing bets on whether or not their passes will arrive before the first game.... and personnel changes are accidentally announced prematurely via Twitter... and you can’t control the message on club news (stadium)... your resale market is run through an online meat grinder (stubhub) and you undermine the resale value of tickets... The management of the cityzens portal and the twitter feed doesn’t function reliably... you auction signed shower mats (I don’t even know where to start with this).....

I could go on...

So yeah, they may not be clueless but it doesn’t matter. This is just another screw-up and they don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I was corrected yesterday and it wasn’t a shower mat, just a locker mat.

So I’m legit pissed at this point that we don’t have a manager actually present to direct our squad.

This is some bush league shit, regardless what I said before. I’ve never heard of such a horrendous bumblefuck of a hire/implementation.

If this is the worst manager hiring process you can think of, you're not thinking hard enough.

Two things to bear in mind:

1. Having a caretaker manager take charge of one game after a manager leaves is pretty typical. Every player on the squad will have probably seen this before. Some people on here are freaking out, but I somehow bet the players aren't.
2. Yes, yes, I get it, they had two weeks. Apropos of nothing, what's everyone's best estimate for how long a visa application takes for a Spanish guy, start to finish?

But otherwise basically correct. I will even raise you a bit. They didn’t need to create a shortlist when the rumors started. They need to keep one at all times. Competently run organizations need to be ready for events that can have a big impact, and this is one of the biggest.

Now, maybe they did have one, and they had more trouble than expected getting their preferred guy to say “yes”. But maybe they were just caught with their pickle in the wind.

With the number of names that got floated from CFG for the job I wouldn't be at all surprised based on past experiences if things got slowed down for a number of different dumb bureaucratic reasons. Did they have a number of internal candidates that wanted the job and they burned weeks considering each of them or at least pretending to in order to keep people happy? Since we have seen that the decision making powers are anything but centralized was there disagreement internally that took time to sort out? Worst case to me still is that Dome was the pick and he was hesitant and they burned time talking him into it. All the other hypotheticals point to organizational dysfunction, but the latter points to a coach that may not be all in on the projects which to me is much worse.

It's also possible they did everything right and the US government processing the visa is the delay.

Here are visa processing times for work related/non-immigrant visas per https://visaguide.world/us-visa/processing-times/

H1B Visa
The H-1B visa processing time generally takes three to six months. However, US Embassies in different countries/cities have various processing times, so it is best to contact them for any details, or visit the US State Department or USCIS for approximate processing times.

L-1A Visa
From the time of your application, you might have to wait an additional 3 to 4 months to get a response on whether you got the visa or not. Blanket petitions are also processed faster than individual ones.In addition, employers have the option of obtaining premium processing for the additional fees, which will speed up the L-1A processing time and you’ll get a response within 1 to 3 weeks.[We're into the third week, so IDK]

L-1B Visa
The L-1B visa processing time is similar to the other L-1 visa category. This means that after your employer files the petition and you apply, it will take approximately 3 to 4 months for USCIS and the U.S Embassy to get back to you with a response. If the employer applies to an individual petition, the processing time will be slightly longer than if the employer applied for the blanket petition. In addition, since premium processing is available for the L-1B visa, the employer can pay the fee for it and have the visa processed for only 1 to 3 weeks.[We're into the third week, so IDK]

O-1A Visa
The O-1A processing time is between two to three months. If you want to have your visa processed faster, there is the possibility of premium processing for an extra fee of $1,225, with which you can get a response for your visa within 15 days. [It would appear the 15 days has already lapsed, so IDK]

O-1B Visa
O-1B visa can take two to three months to get reviewed. If you do not want to wait this long to get your response, then there is a way to speed up the process. For an additional $1,225, premium processing is available for the O-1B visa. Premium processing means that your visa will be processed within 15 days and you will know the answer much sooner.

Not listed is the EB-1 (Extraordinary Ability) visa that it's doubtful Dome qualifies for. There is also the Multinational Executive visa which is similar to the L-1A.

The O-1 visa is the one for extraordinary ability in the arts, sciences, athletics, etc. They would just have to show that he's an accomplished professional and that his talents are worthwhile to import over a citizen. Given his career and the references he could get that shouldn't be that difficult.

David Villa would get the O-1. Tata would get it. I’d be very surprised if Dome would qualify simply for being a long-time assistant coach to Pep (obviously Pep would get it). Being an assistant does not exactly demonstrate extraordinary ability.

The bar isn’t as high as that. My wife and several of her coworkers have been here on O-1As so I’m familiar. With Dome’s resume and the idea that he’s being hired because he’s specifically knowledgeable in a system NYCFC uses there shouldn’t be any issue proving his worth. Most likely it just took longer than anticipated to be able to see Patrick off and get everything together officially to apply for Dome. And if that’s down to some sloppiness by the FO that wouldn’t be a great shock.

I will defer to you then on that. And maybe you can confirm this part of it too, but I believe for them to get the O-1 visa, as an American company (Dome signed the contract with NYCFC and not CFG), they very likely also had to show the process of hire in that they also looked at domestic candidates (I find that hard to believe they did) because the purpose of the O-1 is that there isn’t a suitable American candidate that can fulfill the position hence the need to bring in a foreign worker of exemplary ability.

Or am I mixing that requirement up with another visa designation and the O-1 has zero hiring stipulations?

Yes you’re correct on that but I think that’s where the City Way of play makes his case for him. They can argue that there is no immediately available American that can teach their specific system. Regardless of how ultimately true that is it’s at least reasonable.
