True Detective(spoilers)

Just watched the first episode last night. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was promising, but I do think it has potential. It bought probably at least 2 more episodes of my attention. Almost hard to watch in its wallowing depression though.

Just saw it myself.
1. Better, but the opening scene focused tight on Vince Vaughn's face while he talked about being trapped in a basement as a kid was borderline unwatchable. Once that was over, very good stuff.
2. Someone in HBO programming is having a laugh because Wedding Crashers was on tonight.
3.
The Vinci Chief of Police says "One of my men gets shot...." If he were dead he more likely would have said "One of my men gets killed..." I'm pretty sure Ray's alive. He might spend the rest of the season in a hospital bed consulting or something, but he's probably alive.

He took 2 shotgun slugs to the chest though...

True. We'll know in a week.
He took 2 shotgun slugs to the chest though...

I interpreted the second shot as them saying, "he's definitely dead". However, it seems to be a pretty common dramatic device to use gutshots as cliffhangers to NOT kill someone (Peaky Blinders comes to mind, IIRC), so it could be a misdirection. (I had used a clause as a sentence, but I corrected for mgarbowski mgarbowski since he doesn't like that, despite the fact that I think I've earned the right to do so since I am originally from the land of Faulkner. As such, I don't mind my punctuation, or run-ons, etc. if they convey my thoughts. It's not that I don't know what is grammatically correct - it's that grammatically correct doesn't always convey meaning as effectively as a fragment or multiple parentheticals.)

If he's alive, but bed confined, I'll spend the whole season dreading what I'll believe to be an inevitable half-strength Ray has to limp out of bed to shoot out hosted in a half-lit, corner-laden maze construct of some sort to try to save someone/catch the killer. And I don't want the show to be so predictable.

Finally, wtf is up with the bird mask? Weird as hell, as it seems an elaborate mask when a Nixon mask would serve just as well for disguise purposes. I don't know what would be more disappointing: its inclusion being an attempt to be mysterious in throwing out a red herring to drive audience intrigue in a way reflective of S1 while not ever being developed; or its foreshadowing of the revelation of some weird occult-like underpinnings, as that would feel so contrived and forced at this point in the context of what appears to be a more straight forward money-driven, organized crime/racketeering/corruption plot arc as it relates to the whodunit storyline.

Lastly, I'm curious how they develop Riggins character. The whole scene with his mom was weird as shit and made me uncomfortable.

As for the Vaughn scene, I took that to give us a glimpse of how we should expect his character to react to being put in a metaphorical locked basement by Castor (is that the dead guy's name?) fucking him on the development deal. All of his money and financial well-being is now tied into a deal that he is not actually in a this point. He is now under threat to lose his home and business interests, and even his family based upon his social climbing wife. We know the last one is important to him because I believe he's mentioned having a child, and there was mention of him remaining "unfettered". (Don't think I've made that up.)

And now, I know mgarbowski mgarbowski is going to hate this post, as it's borderline stream of consciousness. Although, I think most of my posts are, and you haven't ignored me yet. That's what cracks me up when people seem concerned over my negativity. It's not negativity beyond what I suspect many people feel. I just tend to write/talk/react in a stream of consciousness manner. And by the time my consciousness escapes from its measured, rationale-driven professional box into sports message board/entertainment mode, it is not nearly so measured.

  • It's better if he's dead. Letting him live seems a cheat, and the line in the preview could be an intentional misdirection.
  • Grammar rules don't apply in forums sams as in published articles. have away with your Faulknerian ramblings if you like. In 4 years of college the only assigned reading I skipped were 2 of his novels. Couldn't get through them.
  • Bird mask thing was evocative of the Gimp and Eyes Wide shut. Weird sex toy apartment with lots of animal masks and blackmail camera.
  • Riggins and his mom reminded me a bit much of the Darmody's on Boardwalk EMpire, and yes, ick.

I think he's alive. Even right after I saw that I assumed they were just rock salt shells or something non-lethal.

There's also a ton of shots in the trailer that haven't aired yet of him. Maybe they added them to troll us but I doubt it.

He's definitely alive. Note that in the coming attractions, his captain said, "one of my men was shot here," rather than, "one of my men was killed here."

Also,
there have been numerous set photos including Farrell in scenes that have not been shown yet.

Note in the thread that you just repeated like half of what was already posted.

Just watched the latest episode from Sunday, July 5th. Looking forward to getting more details on the Paul character's military background; it's obviously very dark and troubling like everything else in Season 2 -- loved Frank Semyon's DIY dental skills though! (Side note: wasn't there a little more comedic relief in Season 1 with the dialogue between McConaughey & Harrelson?) This season is definitely improving each episode and I think there's potential here. I'm wondering if there may be some occult-like aspect to Caspere's life/death similar to the 1st season. There's clearly A LOT of dark symbolism at work already.

First season they basically used weird sex/violence fetishes to pay off the mystical occult markers they laid down and people thought that was a cheat. I think this season they're starting out directly with weird sex/violence fetishes to avoid that problem. It's interesting how so many viewers are reading that as mystical this time. You're not the only one.

Quiet here. With 3 episodes left I'll finish it out but this is not compelling. Too much time spent in discussions about whether a depressed gangster (who doesn't like that word) should adopt. Then we find out Vince Vaughn pointed Colin Farrell at the wrong guy to kill for raping his wife. Gee, didn't see that coming. Another uncomfortable scene between the CHP guy and his mom. About 473 civilians get killed in a shootout and the repercussions seem non-existent. CHP guy got promoted; McAdams is demoted, but only because she sexually harassed someone; and Farrel's boss seems to think it odd that he retired. BTW, that boss, the Lieutenant, I think he has the hard drive. Then I love how they showed the passage of time, about two months, by having Farrel's hair start turning grey. I'd rather they have that bar finally get a new singer.
