2017 Roster Discussion

I cannot understand this move at all. We would be playing a goalkeeper $100K more when we have another younger promising, taller goalkeeper, who can play out of the back for under $100K!

Pure speculation, but if it got us rid of Mix, then we now have another option to horse trade with.

Mixed on this until we know all the details.

At one point, Johnson was considered to be in the same level as Hamid. He has had two mediocre seasons.
He has two years with the only defense worse than ours. Have you seen the kinds of positions they put him in? And in his case, it's pretty much always the defenders rather than him running around like an idiot.

Plus, we will get to see his goal face, which is world class and some consulation for the bad times.

If you say so.

Sounds good to me. I think in MLS, a good American keeper is step one. Sean Johnson is in that category. Id take him over Guzan. Only question is how is he with the ball. I found an article that talks about him playing with the outfield players while his wrist was injured this year, so I guess he can't be horrible?

Also, why did he fall out of favor in Chicago? If he can't get along with coach...

If the assessment is that Lurch is possibly starting quality but not star quality, making a very high ceiling move for a young American GK at that price is likely + Expected Value.

Here's what I understand and don't understand about this potential GK finagling....

1. Sean Johnson is extra baggage for ATL so they want to move him.
2. Mix is extra baggage for NYCFC so Vieira wants to move him.
2a. Mix allegedly has a no trade clause.
3. ATL appears to covet Mix and NYCFC appears to covet SJ.

So far so good.....

4. If this trade takes place before the draft, then we have to protect SJ otherwise MU could pick him. Mix wouldn't need to be protected because Vieira hopes somebody picks him.
4a. Protecting SJ means we leave somebody else unprotected (debatable if this is problematic since we don't yet know what our 11 look like, but a very real possibility).
5. ATL could just pick Mix in the draft and then trade SJ to MU and come out ahead.
5a. There has to be more to the trade than meets the eye because #5 is the right way to go.
6. Saunders is either picked in the draft, traded afterwards, or he's bought out. No way we keep both his and SJ's salary on the books.

Has Mix green-lit the trade? Does Carlos feel sorry for Reyna as a former teammate and make the trade instead of going with route #5? Is NYCFC throwing in extra $$ to sweeten Mix' salary hit this year?

If it is Mix for Johnson, slam dunk. Can't imagine that's the case because Mix or Guzan would be DPs unless Atlanta got extra TAM.

Otherwise, I'm in wait and see. Saunders certainly wasn't the answer. I was ok going into next season with Eirik to start.

All that being said, this guy used to be on the short list for the next great American keeper. Let's see

Remember that if we take Johnson, we then leave unprotected whichever goalie we would have protected, so it doesn't change anyone else's status.

Johnson for Mix obviously good for us, but I doubt it is Mix for a host of reasons.

So that's $550k of TAM for them. How much TAM do they get as TAM started last season?
I believe $1.2 but I also believe they get extra same as we did as an expansion team. i don't believe they ever released the amount we and Orlando had I think it was figured out online and or via interview with sources from journo's.

I was just browsing the fire forums on big soccer. It's obvious that most of the fans liked Johnson, but there is some underlying question about his distribution.
Incredible reflexes, and I can't speak to his skill with the ball, but I really hope if they are going to get a #1 keeper, we won't have to see the Benny Hill show back there any more in possession.

ETA, there was one hilarious comment, where one guy asked for a list of better keepers in MLS, who are cheaper than Johnson. Saunders was on the list.

That's a good highlight film. Saunders problems weren't just with his distribution his positioning was garbage as well. I never felt the club was completely sold on Erik and that's probably due to the lack of what he's shown on the training pitch.

Here's how I see the Allocation Draft playing out...

- I suspect that Diskerud will have to be protected because of his contract.
- Saunders will end up in Minnesota. This will lock up NYCFC's roster because only one player can be drafted from a team.
- Diskerud, though agrees to leave NYCFC to get more playing time, and is traded to Atlanta for some combination of GAM and/or TAM.

But isn't the reason he has to be protected is because of a no-trade, no-waive clause, I don't think that expires because we protected him from the expansion draft

It could be that Mix will be open to a trade to ATL but not MU. If left exposed MU could grab him. If traded before the draft we'd have to protect our new player.

Which is a Δ in roster spots of 0. We would want to protect the new player and we have to protect Mix assuming the speculation is correct. There is probably another reason our Mix trade has not occurred yet. Occams razor says we simply don't have anyone willing to meet our terms and conditions.
