2018 MLS Offseason Thread

I'm mildly annoyed they figured it out one year too late to help us, but it's the right way to go.

If they had figured it out a year earlier we wouldn’t have drafted the likes of brovsky, grababoy, and wingert. And JK might still be managing this team.

So most LAFC games will only be available via a $35/month streaming service. I'm guessing the commercial team's strategy meeting consisted solely of a guy pointing at a flipchart with the word MILLENNIALS written on it in giant letters. Good luck to them, but I'm glad it's not us doing this experiment.

No kidding.

They are trying to grow their brand against a competitor with a 20-year head start. Broadcasting your games in a way that makes it difficult to see them is not a smart move.

This is cool though: The deal also includes original LAFC programming and content and 30-minute pre- and post-game shows.

Yeah, its an interesting strategy. I'd think they'd want to do this at a cheaper rate now alongside some TV broadcasting for maybe the first 2-3 years and then switch to only the streaming service.
In one sense this is a terrible deal as you're essentially doing a $15 per game pay-per-view. However, if you don't happen to already have cable then $35 a month gives you a pretty decent channel selection. It's basically the major networks plus a ton of sports. On the other hand it's not available everywhere either. So you can get it in Albany but I'm not sure you'll be able to use it in, say, Oneonta which is an hour or so away.

Note that they do carry the YES network.

Since its not going to be on local TV and through that YouTube subscription, are they going to have the games blacked out on MLSLive for LA residents?

They'll be on local tv on a Spanish language channel. No idea if there will be SAP or not.

I figure about $8-9 per game (if that's the only reason you pay for the service), based on $35 x 8 months / 34 games. This assumes you remember to unsubscribe for November through February. If you keep it all year for 34 games it's a bit more than $12 per game.

Valid, but I was assuming you'd go to the home games so figured it'd essentially be for 17 games not 34.

I considered that, but most of us seem to DVR the home games to watch all or part of later so I counted them. I presume YTTV allows time shifting of live sports events, but don't actually know.
Also, neither of us accounted for games on national networks, which raises the cost per each locally televised games. No matter what, I think we agree if you get your TV package via cable, satellite, or a different streaming service, adding on YTTV just for LAFC is expensive.

Sling does not allow you to dvr espn matches. Nor anything on fox. Not sure if YTTV has the same restrictions.

One big reason I think stream services won't let you time shift sports from major networks is those nets get the bulk of their income from cable/satellite subscriber fees and they want to discourage cord cutting. That won't apply to a LAFC network that's only available on YTTV. Even if YTTV generally doesn't allow sports time shifting, LAFC-TV might be different. I cannot think of a reason the club or Youtube would have for not allowing it.

From their FAQ:
YouTube TV is a TV streaming service that lets you watch live TV from major broadcast and popular cable networks. Enjoy local and national live sports, and must-see shows the moment they air. Record all your favorites without storage space limits, and stream wherever you go. Share with up to 5 other roommates or family members in your household.

and
You can record as many programs as you want at the same time, without ever running out of storage space. We’ll even keep each recording for 9 months. Stream from your library anywhere in the U.S.

They say they even let you fast forward through commercials on programs you've recorded.

You're forgetting that JK is a coach that believed success was predicated by some portion of the locker room being comprised of his guys and his system. The majority of his moves support this. My bet is the acquisition mechanism would have been different but the personal would have been roughly the same.

He continued it in Orlando (see Josh Saunders, RJ Allen,) with a slight modification this year. With most of his RSL guys gone he's still gravitating towards guys he knows and in this case that means stockpiling known MLS commodities spun off from other teams in the league trying to use the new TAM to upgrade your roster. The stability and MLS experience of the players he brought in could work out for a year or two but if the whole league is moving forward taking risks and spending money to bring in higher levels of talent and your approach is built on acquiring players known for what they have proven in the past you're bound to be consistently left behind.
