2019 MLS Kit Thread

Are you sure about the scholarships? I thought that any GA has a pool of money sitting there for them to go back and get their degree at any future date - that was the model when Nike had the P-40 project going.
I'm going by Wikipedia for better or worse:
Entering into the program automatically classifies a player as professional, and thus disqualifies them from playing college soccer. As a result, Generation Adidas players are also guaranteed scholarships to continue their college education should their professional career not pan out. - [my emphasis

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Adidas

OTOH this oldish source cited in Wikipedia says any GA player can use it but they have 10 years:

I guess as a practical matter the ones most likely to use it are the ones who don't last several years, but any of them are eligible.

This thread, from the guy who designed FCC’s USL kit, adds some helpful context:

This does provide a lot of helpful context, but it still surprises me that they aren't able to provide authentic quality jerseys. I feel as though that should be able to happen, and perhaps I'm missing something in that thread, but I don't see that covered in there. (the design part I get)

yeah i don’t know about that

Anyway, I’m most disappointed FCC didn’t go with retro block colors in line with the badge

All they had to do was incorporate the "turn" and then you have an actual design element. All of this shit is just so lazy looking to me. What do I know though. These people are making millions selling these things.
Good call. Also, I get why the stripes are white but not necessarily the background being white. Does it snow a lot in Dallas? Also makes it imperceptible. If they wanted subtle they could have gone tone on tone at least. I don't wanna be a hater but these design decisions keep me scratching my head.

Everyone wants teams to be able to negotiate their own kit sponsor, but the overall quality will drop dramatically league wide if this happens. Everyone will go with template kits (like tons of PL teams) and we’ll be stuck with a horrible Nike kit.

There are seriously not that many teams that get full design support and authentic material. Our entire league gets that.

MLS will be WAY more generic and sub par quality if we go to independent contracts.

im not sure i agree with this, i mean im not buying jerseys from other teams so the material may suck. but designs will not be generic, some may be ridiculous but not generic. not everyone will be nike, adidas, puma. you still got others like umbro fuck im sure some will have warrior, New Balance, lotto, I for one would love to see it at least a few years.

How is overall quality going to drop? We already have template kits from adidas for half the teams in the league, so that won't change. Nike's kits are fine, and the same template based structure that adidas does with their teams.

Other brands (New Balance, Umbro, Under Armour, Lotto, Hummel, etc.) all have their own authentic materials. I find most of those companies to be just as comfortable as well as wearable as adidas "authentic." The only thing that makes it "authentic" is an increased price tag for a different (weaker and lighter) material than the replicas. It could be argued the design process will be better for a smaller company trying to make it big with their kit designs versus adidas which makes bajillions on kits not caring about the design or being limited to 5/6 designs by the corporate structure.

MLS is already generic, having a major company like adidas will do that. I still don't see how having more companies involved makes something more generic?

Maybe some smaller teams like the Rapids, RSL, and Columbus suffer from being in smaller markets. But, that could also be used to create some of the most beautiful kits from an underground company vs. getting a basic concept from adidas year after year.

I remember way back when the Revolution had a deal with some small Mexican company. They didn't have any jerseys available for sale anywhere until after they got a new shirt. The players had to use the same shirts for most of the season.

Not making a point, I just love pointing out to younger folks, who dont know what it was like getting maybe one Champions league game per week and having to pay $20 for premier league pay per views, how much being a soccer fan used to suck.

What year was that? The Revs started off with Reebok and then transitioned to adidas.
