Atlanta Postmatch

Random unimportant thought I forgot to cram in last night. Anyone else think the Atlanta kits look weird with stripes in front but not in back? They look like Milan from in front but sort of like Spain from behind IMO.

MLS is a last paycheck to a lot of the older guys who come here IMO. We're very lucky that with Villa it's absolutely not the case. Can't say for sure about Pirlo it might just be that he's a bad fit for the league and our team but he wouldn't be the first former world class player to come here as a paid holiday.

Lewis is a Generation Adidas player, his contract doesn't affect our salary charge. Same with Harrison.

Not what I said. Having more financial flexibility would allow us to absorb someone else that's not currently on the roster

Why do we think Herrera might leave us sooner? I thought it was discussed elsewhere that it will be a while before he can join MCFC due to the rules?

Otherwise, I think you bring up very valid points. I would love to upgrade at RB, but it isn't glaring right now, and as you mentioned, we may need to end up using funds elsewhere on the pitch based on transfers out, injuries, etc.

The whole Herrera thing is funky to me. I don't know if he was bought for us as a toy to skirt the rules, if he was bought as an investment by MCFC to flip onto somewhere else OR if they think he's actually going to play in Manchester.

I'm not convinced that he was ever part of their long term plans.

I've been noodling over the same possibilities. My working assumption is he is definitely a nice prize for us skirting the MLS rules with a Manchester option to flip and a lottery ticket for Manchester if he ends up true world class.

Why not all of the above?

He could have been initially scouted as someone with the potential to make the ManCity first team at some point. But if he can't live up to that potential he will be an asset that is sold off to make some nice profit.

In the meantime NYCFC gets him to polish for a bit while he plays enough games to become eligible for a European visa. #corporatesynergy

I think even 3-4 years ago he wouldn't have come to MLS, the quality was simply much lower. But we have seen the quality get better year after year and the big jump in TAM this year made for another bunch of good players entering the league. The side effect of that being MLS is now good enough to act as a development league in some capacity.

He will be a nice litmus test to see where CFG values MLS as a development league. While the rules prevent him from going to MCFC anytime soon there are still leagues he could go to in Europe as a stop between NYCFC and MCFC. Hopefully they view the MLS experience as equivalent or better than the other options that exist and he stays with us for a few years. If he goes at the end of the season to a mid-tier European league we will know we are still fighting the perception that MLS is an inferior league.

This is my sense as well. They thought he was good enough to turn a profit on and it was good business. In the mean time, we are the beneficiary.

My concern, long term, is that MLS makes a rule where the transfer fee hits the cap to avoid this type of stuff

I'm confused. You say his foot is allowed to be on the line. Later you say half his foot is over as if that's a problem but to be on the line implies half over.
it seems that perhaps the rule is that some part of each foot has to be on some part of the touchline (or behind it), but that you can otherwise be over.
Here's the rule:

At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower:
- faces the field of play
- has part of each foot either on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline
- uses both hands
- delivers the ball from behind and over his head

So, at its most generous, parts of both heels have to be touching somewhere on the line.

CFG: "We are sending Hererra to Holland for 2018."
Reyna: "umm, do you all remember when you took Frank from me after we had his public unveiling, and I had to lie to 20k STH's, and you told me you'd make it up to me?"
CFG: "Claudio, Claudio, did we say that?"
Reyna: "don't Claudio me. You owe me and you owe my STH's. They love Hererra and frankly Patrick's system doesn't work without him - the kid is amazing."
CFG: "that's why we want him to get some experience in Holland, he could be Manchester's next star."
Claudio: "no fcking way. You screwed me with Frank and then dumped Andrea on us knowing that the average player in MLS covers 6miles each game, and he does maybe half a mile if the temperature is over 60."
CFG: "now hold on ju..."
Claudio: "we're keeping Yangel or I'm going to let Gio go to Fulham."
CFG: "ok, ok..."

At a real keyboard, fancy-quoting time.
I'm not sure he's capable anymore. I'm a Pirlo fan. He's a transcendent, generational talent who played the game on his terms. I don't want to see him out there hobbling around and struggling and being (rightfully, a lot of times) a punchline. He still has a role to play at various points if he stays around. It just shouldn't be as a lock starter. He's a situational use only guy at this point - maybe against a bunker or something when we go 3 ATB.
He could, but then we're back to not having any transition from back to front other than long balls. And we lose the ability to pressure higher up the pitch. It's no coincidence that even with Matarrita out, our fullbacks can get further forward.

To me, there are two big arguments against Pirlo after seeing how we play without him:
1) We can't press the other team, either high or in the final third.
2) We play really slowly most of the time when he's on, so even if he drops a dime to a winger or Villa, there's no one around because everyone is back trying to help keep possession.

We've never played quickly through the midfield the way we did last night.
I wasn't clear enough on this in my last posts, and I still need to see this game, but based on Gotham Gator's post I'm pretty sold that this our best midfield three. However, to canchon's point, the new question while Herrera is out is "what is our best midfield three without Herrera?". Hence my assertion that we don't need to play Pirlo at the 6.

Absolutely fantastic today. There should be a mercy rule for teams when Villa gets a sight on goal. He is just too good. When he tried it AGAIN from the halfway line not long after he scored I just hit the deck. I can't even begin to process the amount of joy that man gives me.

Centre backs and centre midfielders both outstanding. Against a smart-looking ATL team too. Hard to see where Pirlo fits into this (very good) team. Important challenge for PV and the front office in the next few weeks.
I loved the little ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he did after taking that shot. Can't believe a I get to see him play in person.

Final nail in Pirlo's coffin is that we have more and better chances this year on offense without him. He bypasses Maxi and every time its a diagonal ball to the wings. He didn't do sprints with the unused subs last night. He just doesn't care this year.

Alternate facts much? He sprinted with all the subs and even turned around to wave and smile at me when I cheered his name. (And he impressed my date in the process! "Yes, of course Pirlo knows me..."). He might not be the best fit for this team at this point in his career and a step slower than everyone else, but he's got the right atttitude and I'm sure he's giving his 100% on the pitch.

I saw a tweet that said he didn't. Don't blame me. I only repatriate news to fit my preexisting opinions

That might have impressed your date but I'm still more impressed that FF told you to FO.
