It looks really small from the TV angles and social media posts...

Officials from Major League Soccer approved the use of Bobby Dodd, which features natural grass with strips of artificial turf running along the edges of the sidelines. The width of the grass and turf is 72.3 yards. The length of the field is 129 yards. FIFA’s prefers fields of minimums of 70 yards wide and 110 yards long. Eales said the club will work with Georgia Tech to replace the strips of artificial turf with natural grass. The stadium seats 55,000 for football.

Couldn't find anything concrete on the actual dimensions on the size of the field used for soccer.

The above is actually pretty helpful. They did replace the strips of artificial turf with grass, so the max width of the field is 72.3 yards, and it's probably closer to 70 to give room on the sides. There is also a strip of concrete on one side that they covered with turf, and that's where the players sit. Given that a football field is 120 yards long, they should be able to go out to that length, so I am guessing 120 x 70.

Easy, they've beaten Minnesota when they sucked historically, they beat a pre Schweini Chicago, shitty Salt lake, and the Dynamo. Credit for drawing TO and Portland, but I don't know where they got some reputation as a top team. Caveat that anything can and will happen in a 90 min soccer game, but we should control play.

To be fair, I think they've really taken a hit with Martinez being hurt; he may get a run out in our game, but that's questionable, and he isn't supposed to start.

A couple months back I found some articles indicating that BD had the same dimensions for soccer as YS. I haven't been able to relocate that information, though.

Good thinking. I was able to use that information to find the below article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The dig up the old (discredited) Peter Vermes quote about our field actually being 106 x 68. I've added a Dirty South blog post that rehashes the whole thing and then uses good sleuthing and an unfortunately deceptive camera angle to claim we are only 68 yards wide.

The Yankee Stadium field that NYCFC calls home may be the closest approximation soccer has to a bumper-car track.

The field is listed as 110 yards long by 70 yards wide, which is the same dimensions as the Bobby Dodd Stadium field that Atlanta United calls home.

But the Yankee Stadium field isn’t 110 x 70. It’s not even close. The only on-the-record, independent measurement was done by Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes, who walked it off in 2015 and was quoted as saying it’s 106 yards long by 68 yards wide.

Yeah I agree, the results don't match the rep. They have a decent offense with young flashy DPs, but their defense is weak as you'd expect from a year 1 expansion team. The fact that they start Jeff Larentowicz is a pretty good sign that they have some considerable holes. Good leader, solid MLS experience, way way past the point in his career that he should be starting for an MLS club.

Everyone has a grababoy

The biggest thing favoring Atlanta in this game is the game is in Atlanta. Since last year NYC has been a very good road team, but still wins only 42% of the time (10-10-4 record). No result should be considered a surprise, but it's also fair to say we have as good a chance at winning as Atlanta does.

Not sure I want to push Matarrita.

Then again, how much will he miss with the Gold Cup?

Looking at the Dark Sky app...

88 degrees at kickoff of 5 PM. 38% of drizzle between 4 - 6 PM.

I think we're tactically suited to playing a team like Atlanta. Atlanta is a countering team. They break fast out of the back and assume that they will do more with the chances they create than the opposition will. However, we're good (at least to MLS standards) at moving the ball around under pressure. We also thrive on possession and are adept at breaking a defense down by playing through the middle. Atlanta doesn't have a very good defense. Theoretically, at least, we should be one of Atlanta's bogey teams in the same way that the Red Bulls are one of our bogey teams.

However, if we make a few mistakes at the back or if we fail to convert our chances, especially early in the game we could very well find ourselves down and demoralized in stadium full of uppity fans playing a team of young players with big egos. A team like Atlanta, much like the Red Bulls, plays at a much higher level than normal when they're confident. It's a frustrating trait to an opposition team. This same trait, though, makes them a team that will give up easily if we can get a lead, especially a two goal lead, early.

I think we miss Khiry at the end of games when we are trying to kill the game off. I know T Tom in Fairfield CT and Midas Mulligan disagree with me on this, but our ability to play the ball up to him in lieu of playing out of the back allows us to kill time. I think he is decent at holding up play and his speed also allows us chances against a beaten up defense.

It's too bad he's been a general bust though. #2 pick in the draft and sometimes he doesn't even make the 18.

I'd prefer Khiry in at the end to kill off a game over TMac. Speed and strength to chase down the ball, and might even get lucky creating a goal.

Injuries killing us this game. I really hope they get Matarrita back Sunday, and Ethan White is important.

Otherwise its basically Alex ring trying to get the ball through midfield. Even at full strangth, if I were Atlanta, I'd close off the wings and force us to play central to expose Lopez. If we are on second string fullbacks, that basically takes care of the wings for them, and I forsee bad things in that case. Could be a lot of Maxi dropping deep and Villa frustrated.

This is a very interesting post. Because of how bad Kreis was tactically last week, we basically walked the ball from Ring to Maxi. We avoided Lopez.

Sweat has been decent in creation. White has been decent in overlap. The key of course is still Ring pinging balls around the field to avoid congestion in the midfield

I'd expect White back - he looked like he came out of the last game with cramping from overused/tired legs. As long as he didn't tear the constricted muscle, a lot of deep tissue massage this week would take care of it.

Also, the first time we played Atlanta, Sweat was the LB, and while he was a bit shaky in his first start, he's gotten far more comfortable since then.

I saw no sign of him in the training photos or the video, anyone catch a glimpse of him? Would be great to have him back for this game.
