Nil Satis Nisi Optimum--official Everton Thread

Holy shit, would Tim Howard really want to spend his twilight seasons at one of the worst clubs in MLS?

Maybe he wants to go someplace where there won't be many boos. Not many fans and the ones who are there are pretty mellow.

Looks like the Toffees have finally picked up their own billionaire investor ahead of next season's tv rights money windfall, as Farhad Moshiri has sold his chunk of Arsenal and bought 49.9% of Everton (pending Premier League approval).

Meanwhile, it's looking even more likely that Tim Howard is joining the Colorado Rapids. Sucks that he's joining such a crappy, mismanaged team, but it will be nice to see him when he visits Yankee Stadium next year.

Not sure anyone's even following this thread anymore, but now that the official word has come down that Roberto Martinez has been sacked I figure there's stuff to talk about.

http://www.espnfc.us/club/everton/3...s-own-failings-in-dismal-end-to-everton-reign

I feel the writing has been on the wall ever since the new investor arrived. If I'd sunk that much money into an underperforming team with a manager who kept giving delusional press conferences, sacking the manager would be the first thing on my mind. It remains to be seen, of course, how much of the blame really rests on the players.

The team has even canceled their awards dinner, apparently, which means things are very much a bummer around Goodison and Finch Farm.

The idea of Frank de Boer coming in is intriguing. He did win four straight Eredivisie titles with Ajax (and nearly won again this year), but obviously the Premier League is not the Eredivisie. It would be interesting to me to see the squad move from the pseudo-Barça style they'd been attempting unsuccessfully under Martinez to a pseudo Ajax/Dutch style... of course, the Dutch national team has been garbage this year so that's a bit worrisome given the tight intertwining of Ajax and the Dutch national team. But de Boer is known for his possession-based strategy with youth-oriented teams. If we're lucky we could be the next Spurs.

And naturally the email offering preorders on 2016/17 kits went out today.

Anyhoo, onward and upward, NSNO and all that.

We've picked up Steve Walsh from Leicester as our new Director of Football. He's the guy generally credited with bringing Riyad Mahrez and N'golo Kante to the Foxes.

...so that means we're winning the title this year, right?

...I'm the only one still active in the Everton thread, aren't I.

Slow start to the off-season it run ours abound now.

Lukaku back to Chelsea looks likely.

Similar to nycfc often ink isn't dry, and they haven't played a game, I don't believe we've signed anyone.

Lukaku is tagged at 70M... Are Chelsea really going to pay that?

They've signed Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa to be a Kante-like CDM, and they've definitely signed Maarten Stekelenburg as a keeper (maybe the #1? Maybe just a better #2 than Robles?). The Guardian reported yesterday that Everton is likely to sign Ashley Williams in the expectation that John Stones is leaving.

But yes, so far a very quiet transfer window.

The Ashley Williams to Everton move appears to have gone down the drain. Swansea rejected buds of £10 and £12 million for their captain.

He would have been an absolutely fantastic pickup for the toffees.

As a Swansea fan, I think Everton should've paid more, like 15. Ashley is a rock. I know age is worrisome but just the next 3 years of Ashley would improve any defense in the Premiership.

I'm also happy the Toffees didn't since Ashley can stay on a Welsh team as the Welsh captain :D

I'm a swans fan as well, so it makes me quite happy to see that the deal has fallen through. Don't want Ash anywhere else in the Premiership.

This has been one hell of a transfer window for the Toffees so far. Any Everton fans left on the board? Or would I be talking to myself when I complain that we don't need Rooney at his wage bill?

You might be talking to yourself, but you would be absolutely right. Rooney is a spent force, he wouldn't do anything to replace Lukaku. Better leaving him to fade away in the shadows somewhere else.

Rooney coming back is more of a feel good story. He might bring some leadership/will to win to the locker room.

Call me a bad Evertonian but the whole thing just reeks of absurd nostalgia. I know Rooney wanted to keep playing in England in hopes of riding the bench on the 2018 World Cup squad, and he refused to go to any other English club so Man United were sort of hamstrung, but it seems like such a frivolous use of Everton's newly flush transfer coffer to indulge this.

How can he fit into Koeman's increasingly young, mobile, already very deep midfield? What happens if Everton succeed in signing Gylfi Siggurdsson? Is Rooney happy being a semi-super sub, regardless?

Here's hoping the Lukaku money ends up buying some more fullback depth and some sort of #9.
