NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

Given how many times in the past European clubs have come to raid MLS Academy teams, I think we're OK. You guys may be getting a little bit too excited, and you may be reading a little bit too much into a 2nd flight tournament win...
Not speaking for anyone else, but I don't give a shit about the tournament win. I'm looking at 2 talented youths who'll leave and we get nothing.

And no, I'm not too excited over them. They both standout as being gifted far beyond a "good academy player". Enough so and so obviously, you're the one who's misguided if you don't think they have options.

Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan is correct. Gio may be the best American in his age group. Sands isn't but he's one of the top defensive American players in the world who is not a professional yet. BOTH will have the option to play in europe at a high level if they want to.
Or at least give it a shot. When I see Gio play, I see a kid who right now could contribute to the U17 team.

Sands looked good yesterday. Thank God the US won. I needed something after two turds laid by my two club teams.

Happy to hear that Sands looked good. It will be interesting to see what his fit is long term with NYCFC. I think it's a CDM to start (and I think he can make more money there long term) but I do believe his natural position to be a distributing CB. I do think Sands ends up in New York for a bit.

Which is my worry about Gio...

If Gio is that good at this age, Man City will take him (Claudio played there and well CFG obviously)

Maybe we should start getting hyped about Jose Flores, Alex Rando, Will Citron and others that we actually may be able to retain. It's kind of crazy that our first graduating class ever may have two players that are too good.

Gio will not go to Man City's EDS.
Where is he going? Fulham? Not sure if I read that here or elsewhere.

Or is he going to do what dad didn't and head to La Masia? Does Barca even take academy players as old as Gio?

Other than Messi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Pique, Guardia, Puyol, Xavi, Thiago Motta, Pedro, both Dos Santos brothers, Alba and Busquets, who has even come through the Barcelona Academy lately?

And you skipped my favorite: Thiago Alcantara

He's asking if La Masia accept kids that are Gio's age or if they prefer to get them in younger.
Yes, this is what I meant. I thought they focused on the u12 or younger.

They sign players for Barca B so it wouldn't be a new precedent for them.
This would make some sense.

just saw that they played two games in two days....i mean how is that even helpful when one is away

We'll see him next year for a few games. Alphonso Davies made his debut last year at 15 years, 257 days old. Reyna turns 15 on November 13. If he debuts at the exact same age Davies did, it would be on July 27, 2018.

It would be perfect for us if he didn't have a UK passport. He'd be stuck here for the next three years. I still think he'll sign a pro contract and play one or two with us, but he could be gone by 17.
