2015 Mls Season Attendance Thread

I think the original MLS founders will agree that in retrospect they went after the wrong demographics, focusing on soccer Mom's and Hispanics in large cities, playing in giant stadiums and creating crazy Americanized rules which alienated traditional soccer fans.

The again they were in a panic to meet their commitment to establishing a league before the 1994 World Cup, with no owners and no pool of professional players. Plus there was no saturation coverage of the Premier League in those days, which has really raised interest in the game.

But...I still can't believe it took 15 years to include the Pacific Northwest teams.

Nothing stopping original teams from rebranding or new marketing strategies to bring in new fans. Of course there is no time like the beginning to light a spark in your marketplace. But if you already have a base of thousands of fans you've got to be able to work with them to build excitement. I wonder how much of this is about the management of the original teams.

i think thats part of the problem, but its time owners doubled down on MLS. Its only going to get bigger from here.

Watching the DC-Orlando game on FS1, apparently Orlando has had the highest attendance of any expansion club through its first seven games on a game by game basis. Also their fans have a confetti problem. The entire final third looks like a Kesha concert.

That is an impressive open for Orlando. At the same time I think consistency is most important for a club's health. How much of their attendance numbers are driven by that first game where (I think) they sold around 60k tickets?

As a data guy I was taught you often learn more when you drop the top and bottom numbers out of a dataset.

I'd be curious how we stack up against them if you compare each of our average game attendance numbers minus each of our highest and lowest games.

Orlando Overall: 36,595
Orlando Removing Outliers: 33,283

NYCFC Overall: 26,889
NYCFC Removing Outliers: 24,851

This isn't counting this week's games.

Wow. I take back my skepticism. I thought a lot more of their big number was from their opener against us.

I hate Kesha too......

CenturyLink will fully open its upper deck seats for games against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Aug. 1, the Portland Timbers on Aug. 30, the LA Galaxy on Oct. 4 and Real Salt Lake on Oct. 25. Last year they averaged 55,000 for the 5 games when the upper deck was fully open, this season they're gunning for 60,000 with special 4 game packages, plus the Man Utd vs Club America friendly.

Who doesn't want to watch Club America get totally outclassed by a Man U team that has a total salary higher than some countries GDPs?

What is it about Seattle that fans seem to love?

Week 15 numbers

NYCFC v Montreal - 24,042

Columbus v LA Galaxy - 21,051

New England v Chicago - 15,775

Seattle v FC Dallas -41,108

Orlando v DC United - 30,054

Total for Week 15 (5 games) = 132,030

AVG for Week 15 = 26,406

Total After Week 15 (146 games) = 3,022,874

Average After Week 15 = 20,705

Only 5 games this weekend. Pity the Columbus game was delayed for 2 odd hours due to storms, which caused a lot of fans to head home early.

To compare, this was 2014's average after Week 15: 18,496

That's an increase of 11.9%, which would be the biggest jump in league history (previous record was +8.8% in 2001, +8.2% in 2007, and +7.2% in 2011).

If we maintain the 11.9% increase throughout the year, our final average would be about 21,430, up from 19,151.

Those are some pretty numbers. Absolutely on pace to destroy the 20k ceiling.

On wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Major_League_Soccer_season ) the MLS average attendance is 20,672. What is the truth ?

I could have added something wrong along the way so dont take my figures as 100% accurate.

Average seems pretty close to the 20,700 mark either way.
