Villa actually did have some trouble. He sailed a ton of them early in the season - especially on corners. He actually didn't score on a free kick until July - when he scored in two consecutive matches at which point Pirlo joined the team, took over as fk specialist, and sailed the remainder (although Pirlo almost hit that olimpico in which case much would have been forgiven). So considering the season started in March and Villa didn't score a free kick goal until July - it took him 4 months (less injury time) to hit one - maybe Pirlo just ran out of time. November would have been his month ;)
This. Well said.

Welp, Omar Gonzalez to CF Pachuca.
Wait, so after MLS ups the TAM because LA couldn't keep their CAP in check and balance the books, LA goes and sells OG off ??? They now are in a position to really go and hit the transfer market - having their cake and eating it too!!!

On one hand, I think that defensive designated players are just about always a bad idea.

On the other, it's yet another player the league is losing to Liga MX, which is a direct competitor in the CCL.

This move might be good for Omar, but I'm not sure it's great for LA. They don't announce the financials, though, so if they got a stupid fee for him... That changes things.

Omar Gonzales is not $750,000 better than Nat Borchers or $550,000 better than Laurent Ciman. That's they key here. This is smart business for LA. They can go get another defender of equal quality for much less. They now have at least $450,000 of cap room to do so.

you reach diminishing return on incremental dollar paid for higher quality player. but that's almost universal pattern set by market and makes sense. you can't say A is 2x the quality/caliber of B and therefore A is only worth the 2x the price as B. So if A charges a 3x price a team is better off with paying 1x for B. It does not work that way, the top tier you go, the more you have to pay for just that extra little quality, millions more because of the scarcity of such incremental quality. so if A is 2x better than B, you probably have to pay 5x as B or even more...that's the value set by market. my point is you can't compare player value based on price/quality index unit or measurement. the better a player is, the higher the ratio.

You lost me on your math, but I think I get your point.

Fact of the matter is that they never intended on making him a DP anyway. He wanted a payday, it was the only way they could keep him around until they could sell him.

Simple really. It's an exponential curve with noncongruence due to the parametric vector.

I think it's more likely that they use the money they freed up by selling OG to keep Zardes.

OG would have been a great addition to our roster. A large boost to our crumbling line. Sadly his price was too much for us. I hope we can find someone of his caliber or better at a decent price.

Exhibition A why MLS' salary is damaging US soccer. Rediculously high incomes are needed to wrestle good talent pool away from other major sports in this country. Fire the owners who won't allow salary cap lifted (or form a new league). At the minimum, starting 11 of each club should make north of 2mm per person while the rest should be paid the minimum of 250k. Why would any of us waste time watching a group of poorly paid athletes play? While high income does not guarantee high quality, low income will always guarantee you low quality. Is that not common sense? what am I missing that MLS is not getting this?

  • The value of the MLS TV contract.
  • The ratings.
  • The general level of soccer interest in the US.
  • The overall level of soccer talent in the US.
None of them justify or could sustain the salaries you suggest. MLS could poach the best talent from La Liga, Bundesliga, EPL, Serie A, and Ligue 1, and the result would be a massive jump in overseas television ratings, and the fifth most popular team sport league in the States.

Ashley Cole to the beach in 3… 2…
LA's had a good run of Locker Room Cancer remission, but If they get a checkup soon, it's going to show a return of Stage 2 or Stage 3 in the form of Cole-rectal and a pain in all of their asses.
