The Ericksen collapse was eerily similar to that of Keyontae Johnson, a basketball player for Florida, this past December. Moments after making a fast break dunk, Johnson blacked out and fell face forward on the court. Fortunately, a cardiologist was sitting courtside, and she helped stabilize him. He spent a few days in a medically induced coma with myocarditis - a viral inflammation of the heart muscle.
He ended up rejoining the team, but was not medically cleared to play. He stayed on the bench, acting very much like an extra coach. He has announced that he hopes to return to the court for Florida next year, but he is still not cleared to play. It's a sad situation, as he's a good kid, who had been picked as pre-season SEC Player of the Year.
Myocarditis can be a side effect of Covid, including well after the initial infection. Somehow they were able to determine that Johnson's problems were not Covid related. It's possible that Eriksen's may be, however.
Hopefully, Eriksen makes a full recovery - it seems like he's off to a good start.
