NYCFC ticket reps have a tough job, but the NYCFC logistics team are the real heroes. They probably have had to make 17 contingency plans in the last 3 years that we don't even know about because things worked out so their alternative plans were not needed. When things do go bad, they have few good choices, and they get unfair negative feedback. This fall they have no good choices it seems. There's a decent chance the Mets don't make the playoffs or don't get past the WC game or first round. But they can't count on any of that now, so they're making plans for Connecticut or New Jersey which they know everyone will hate, and attendance will suck, and the club won't make money and home field advantage is basically squandered and there's just no winning. And if things work out and YS or even Citi is available it just means everything they did was pointless.

They've floated the idea of hosting a home match at Red Bull Arena. This would be a death blow to the club.
Here’s the thing though, I cannot believe that MLS made these decisions at the last minute and in a vacuum. They may have just announced the playoff schedule, but it’s impossible to believe that the teams haven’t been a part of the process since the beginning of the season.NYCFC ticket reps have a tough job, but the NYCFC logistics team are the real heroes. It's not whether we can cover their stuff... It's about the fact that we have to play a home game in NJ.I’ve mentioned before. If they could cover all the RB logos and red with NY is BLUE it could work. Have 3rd rail fill their SS. As long as STHs show up and we fill it.
Only fear is if our supporters don’t buy playoff tickets to go to a smelly stadium in NJ and it’s empty. Or worse we “host” NJ and they fill it up with their fans.
It’s probably more about getting them to agree as that is a high security area.I don't know if a soccer field could fit, but Michie Stadium at West Point would be really cool to see a game at, but the more likely possibility is going renting out Metlife.
The Mets rallied last night from 4-0 down to win in the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off walk. A loss would have meant elimination, so they are technically still alive with any loss by them or win by Milwaukee ending their post-season chances.Updating the above for the moronic playoff schedule that was just announced.
The weekends in play are as follows.
The MLS Cup is more than a week after the end of the World Series.
- First Round MLS Playoffs (Sat-Sun, Oct 19-20) and very end of AL/NL Championship Series
- Second Round MLS Playoffs (Wed-Thur, Oct 23-24) and the World Series
- MLS Conference Championship (Tue-Wed, Oct 29-30) and the end of the World Series
First Round MLS Playoffs
The MLB Divisional Series end no later than Oct 10. By experience, we know that if the Yankees make the ALCS, they will move the NYCFC game that weekend whether or not they would be hosting games on or near the given MLS playoff date. The ALDS will end no later than Oct 10, so we would know at least 9 days in advance if there is a conflict.
The Mets are 3 games out of a Wild Card game. For there to be a conflict at Citi Field, the Mets would need to make the playoffs, win the Wild Card game and then win the divisional series. If the Mets do all that, they will not be hosting any playoff or World Series games within 3 days of the MLS playoff game because the Mets will not have home field advantage in either series. Whether the Mets will be willing to host NYCFC in between the ALCS and World Series is anyone's guess (the Yankees would not).
The third choice is Hartford. UConn hosts a football game on Saturday. It's not clear whether that would allow an MLS Playoff game on Sunday. Yale, incidentally, does not host a football game on Saturday, so the Yale Bowl in New Haven would be available both days (although Yale just installed artificial turf). Columbia hosts a game on Saturday, but its turf stadium at the northern end of Manhattan (17,000 seats) would be available on Sunday.
It is worth noting that if we finish first in the East, we will not be playing a game in this round in any event.
Second Round MLS Playoffs
If the Yankees make the World Series, we will not be playing this game in Yankee Stadium. We won't know whether they make the World Series until fairly close to the playoff game - anywhere from 3 days to 8 days. The lower end might not be enough time to shift the venue, so it's possible the pull the trigger to move the venue before the ALCS is over.
If the Mets make the World Series, we will not be playing this game in CitiField; with the same analysis that applies to the Yankees above. It is worth noting that these dates conflict with the first four games of the World Series, so it doesn't matter whether either team is home or away.
Because this game is mid-week, the stadiums for UConn, Yale and Columbia would all be available.
MLS Conference Championships
If the Yankees make the World Series, it is possible for us to host a game on Wednesday, Oct 30 if the Yankees do not have home field advantage. The last game for the "visiting" team is Oct 27, which is 3 days before the playoff game. Of course, this would not leave any cushion in the event of a rain or other delay.
The same analysis holds for the Mets and Citi Field.
Because this game is mid-week, the stadiums for UConn, Yale and Columbia would all be available.
It is also possible that MLS would agree to push this playoff game by a day or two in order to wait for a stadium to become available. The league has done this in the past - Seattle is one example.
Following up on the Dartmouth-Princeton game the day before the MLS Cup. I checked the ticket site. There are only tickets being sold in the lower 2 decks (and even then not all seats), and lots of tickets are available. Take that for what you will.
We are probably also jinxing things to even be discussing it.
Why does Minnesota? Don't they have their own stadium?Among other revelations...
- NYCFC is concerned about the MLS Cup final. It cannot occur the day after the college game. The article does not say whether that game might be moved. The golf event at Citi Field hasn't yet put any tickets on sale.
- Met Life is not available for the MLS Cup.
- Announcement on different scenarios for NYCFC would come early next week.
- Seattle, Minnesota and Atlanta also have potential conflicts in their arenas.
Why does Minnesota? Don't they have their own stadium?
Also:Small fact for those curious. The Princeton- Dartmouth game was announced on March 31, 2017 - about 2.5 years ago. This was well before MLS moved the MLS Cup for 2019 to the same weekend. In fact, in 2017 the second weekend in November was an open date in the playoffs due to a FIFA International Window.
The game was conceived as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of college football. The first game, between Princeton and Rutgers, was on Nov 6, 1869. Open questions include: Why is Dartmouth involved instead of Rutgers? and why isn't the game in East Rutherford, NJ, where that first game was played?
