What do you think about these two french stadiums Populous designed?

Not a fan of the wo boxy ones. That's actually a bias of mine overall. Of the two I prefer the second.
Then Lyon is another that looks lovely at night. Light is so damn important to these images. The designers have a lot more control at night, but it's possible to design to look good in daylight. That white roof in the daytime looks like a tent. To be fair, these midday aerial shots are meant to be revealing, not flattering. The obviously chose days where the sky was clear and the light is flat and boring.

Remember, you'll never experience the stadium via those aerial shots, unless you're flying. In NYC, while it'd be great to have a landmark exterior design, it's not as crucial due to the density of the city-grid. What's most important is the interior: sight lines, acoustics, amenities, jumbotrons, seat quality, etc.

Inside and outside they are two different things. And per Ulrich Ulrich's comment above, in NYC a box might fit better than anything else.
Perhaps something like one of these.

In Monaco.

It has a strange interior.

The other is in Bern. I've always liked this one in particular.

Imagine a stadium that has a red brick facade that is designed to look like an apartment buildings, complete with windows and fire escapes.

Would probably be kind of silly but it might work.

We should just make it look like a Costco from the outside. Our attendance numbers would be astronomical.

Isn't that exactly what Atlanta is planning to do? Marketing banners over unused sections. Yes, the Falcons will play there too, but who the hell knows, I'd welcome the Jets if it didn't affect our site lines and they were the tenant.
It's curtains for them! Curtains I tell ya!

No, really. Curtains.

I never ever go to Costco on a weekend, I just can't handle it!

I love Costco though.

I'll grant you the bounce possibilities, but do we know for a fact that those things happen based on other teams' attendance numbers? I just think 30k is safer and maybe a lot cheaper then 40k, and if we go with an "easily" expandable 30k we may be a lot better off than with a 60% filled 40,000 seat stadium.

We know we can do 25k with ease for almost every match. I think I'd rather have 17 30k sellouts in a row after we win the cup rather than a 40k stadium that's never full.

Maybe I'll look at Seattle and Portland and see what their attendance is like. Maybe LA, too. The big teams. Philadelphia has a SSS stadium, so maybe I'll gather their numbers too, or Columbus.
Portland attendance numbers won't mean much, just because they are always full. Frankly, they are doing a poor job from an economics perspective, as they should either raise prices or build a bigger boat (or both).

As others have said, 30k is probably the minimum size for us if you consider 75-80% STH as the target. Why not go ahead and make it 40k then? How amazing would it be to be able to host competitive US matches in the city? Build at 40 anywhere in the 5 boroughs, and Red Bull Arena is a non-factor in competing for events. CFG has a low cost of capital, so they aren't necessarily giving up a lot to build the extra capacity a 5-10 years earlier, and in fact, might gain by being able to host a CFB bowl or other games, exhibitions/friendlies (ICC for example), etc.

Just thinking about all of the poor saps who are going to log on for the first time today here soon and see 3 pages of new posts and all of the disappointment when it's all bullshit.

Makes me evil villain laugh in my head.

Regarding size, this has certainly been hashed out a bunch, but not in a while, and we have more attendance data to consider. I recommend checking out this thread to get some data on numbers.

A few thoughts.
  • We are averaging about 27,000 this year down from about 29,000 last year; as some predicted, the novelty wore off for a portion of the fans. I don't think this continues after this year.
  • League attendance tends to go up 3-5% per year, although this varies considerably from year to year and team to team. We need to factor in this potential growth so that we don't outgrow our stadium too quickly.
  • There are MLS teams that underbuilt and are in stadiums that are too small and cap their attendance - Portland is the classic example.
  • Everyone knows that the atmosphere is much better in a stadium that is full than in one with lots of empty seats, even if the number of fans is the same. That said, you don't need to be at 100% capacity to have that kind of energy. We should be targeting 75-80% capacity, so there is room for growth and for sellouts for bigger games.
  • With a new stadium, we should expect more fan interest, and a better experience. This could result in an attendance bump from the stadium itself. I think, however, that the Club will increase ticket prices when we move, so I don't think we end up with a big boost in numbers. Just a guess.
  • If you assume we end up in a stadium after 3 more seasons, and we grow from here at 3% per year, that means we are managing toward 29,500 that first year, and 34,000 five years after the stadium is built.
  • For 29,500 to be 80% of capacity implies a stadium of 36,875. So, something in the 35,000 - 38,000 range seems right.
