UEFA Champions League 16/17

UEFA have announced that from 2018 onwards the top four countries (i.e. Spain/Germany/England/Italy) will all get four guaranteed places in the group stage. Also, country and possibly club coefficients will now be slightly increased based on previous trophy wins.

Not sure this is a positive development but it's supposedly the latest appeasement to put back talk of the Super League for another 3 years. At least they didn't go ahead with the initial plan, which would have had certain clubs be granted automatic entry if they failed to qualify through their domestic leagues, on the principle that they were somehow "too important" to not be playing in the competition...

Chelsea cry babies.

Amusing article in today's NY Times about how much behind the scenes work is involved in preparing for Champions League games. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Europeans love to regulate every last aspect of the experience - and for a new entrant like Leicester, it can be a lot to deal with.

In the course of 155 pages, no detail is considered too fine, no issue deemed too trivial. From the level of glare given off by the stadium lights to the size of a club mascot — “only slightly larger than a normal person” — the manual issued by UEFA to every entrant in the Champions League, soccer’s most glamorous club competition, covers it.

A vast majority of the teams preparing for the first round of group games this week, of course, will know many of the rules and regulations by heart. Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus and the defending champion, Real Madrid, are here every year.

They know that each dressing room should contain three individual seated toilets, that there must be space on the covered substitutes’ bench for 14 people, and that the sponsor’s logo on a goalkeeper’s gloves must not exceed 20 square centimeters.

They were very welcoming allowing Leicester to whoop them 3-0 :D

Manchester City with a very comfortable 4-0 over BMG in a game delayed 24 hours because of weather. I have very few complaints with anything I've seen from them thus far this season.

Pulisic by all accounts very good in Dortmund's thrashing of Legia Warsaw.

For all the heartache about American players returning to the U.S. the last few years (Dempsey, Bradley, Altidore, Jones, Howard, Klejstan, Bedoya) - we had 4 guys on rosters for UCL games this week. More than I can remember having.

ugh, if Aguero stays healthy, Man City is going to be hard to beat.
But do they have the squad depth to play both CL and EPL? That's been their undoing in the past, along with injuries; maybe Pep is better with his rotation to keep guys fresh??? If so, they have a ton of offensive power this year and can do damage provided they don't mimic NYCFC with an equal number of goals allowed. Wouldn't that be a kicker?!?

hopefully Man City says screw FA Cup and League Cup and just focuses on the PL and UCL.

Ronaldo with a clear handball in the box but not called by Mark Clattenburg and then scores to put Real Madrid up 1-0 vs Dortmund in the 14'

If you're not watching City-Celtic right now on FS2, what else are you doing? It's 3-3 through 75'

It's been a crazy game too as City's had to come back from a goal down three times already.

Fire Pep immediately! Even with 10 straight wins, a tie to Celtic is an extreme disappointment!
