Somewhat off topic but a thought I've been carrying for a couple years now.
I think this period of no "big name" DP's has been great for the club culture. We've played in sub-optimal and inconsistent stadiums, no big names, inconsistent results and various mis-steps by the front office in supporter relations.
In doing so, we've developed a dedicated and knowledgeable baseline of supporters. In the early years, I'd be surrounded in the stands by fans openly mocking the league, being unable to name anyone other than the big names they came to see (and Poku). Progressively, I've seen a much lower percentage of those types, and much more frequent types that know the players, talk about former players they wish we still had, and regale about great games from the past.
I know that this would have happened anyway with time, but I do think they've thinned the herd of curious onlookers, obvious Messi game aside. I'm not sure if many Pirlo/Lampard fans stuck around (where's that Pirlo super fan that was on here for a year or two lol) after they left, but I think we've built a true fan base nearly big enough to fill our stadium.
