Atlanta United v New York City
Bobby Dodd Stadium (5:00pm ET)
REF: ARMANDO VILLARREAL
AR1: Kyle Atkins
AR2: Eric Weisbrod
4TH: Marcos DeOliveira
If I can't immediately say the referee's name in Simon Borg's voice, he can't be too bad.

(unlike Silvio Petrescu, referee Mark Geiger and Jair Maruffo who seem to try to get on Instant replay every week.)

Stealing my weekly referee post I see...

Saw that, the one against Dallas was so non-defensible. If that wasn't a handball, literally nothing is.
We have been the beneficiary of some really bad refereeing this year. Lots of lost points to missed PKs and that one home game where everything was allowed for the opponent and nothing for us.

When do we become the league golden boys who get all the calls their way? I feel like MLS is treating us like USA gets treated in Concacaf. But with all the $ and tv ratings we're bringing in we deserve Galaxy treatment at some point.

On yesterday's SITC podcast, Crooks said he thought we would go with the same starting lineup against Atlanta that we did against Orlando, which means Lopez for Pirlo, even if the Maestro is healthy. He was basing that off something Patrick said about Mikey's performance, and he didn't get any disagreement from the crew.

Seems logical, Mikey while a considerable step down in talent is the closest like for like replacement we have for Herrera. If PV and the team have finally come around to the idea that we play best with an athletic midfield Lopez seems like the only option right now. Maybe they will save Pirlo for home games in order to leverage the smaller field.

If a summer Pirlo departure is truly a possibility I hope we get some advance warning followed but him getting some game time at Yankee stadium for some proper departure appreciation. While it's gotten a bit bumpy recently getting to watch him has been awesome and he's had some memorable moments for NYCFC.

I like Pirlo, but if the choice is getting him some game time as a farewell for the fans versus our perfect midfield to win games, sign me up for a special after-season testimonial friendly for Pirlo (vs Juventus?) and sit his butt on the bench in the meantime.

Has Pirlo become a worse DP signing than Lampard? Gerrard? Jermaine Defoe?

Pirlo lead the team in assists last year with 11 and played almost every game. I'd say health puts him ahead of Lampard and with the assist contributions he easily passes Gerrard who did next to nothing. He's been extremely disappointing this season but to totally write off last year is some serious recency bias.

It's between Gerrard, Lothar Matthaus, and Rafael Marquez.

Lothar technically wasn't a DP, but he was the equivalent designation of the time.
Oh what a disaster Lothar was. He probably sold close to zero tickets because he was not really even a name player, just played on big teams. He got fat, literally just left the team for a summer vacation in the middle of the season, and contributed next to nothing to the club. You really can't get much worse.
