According to the report, Soon-Shiong and team CEO Jason Levien are preparing to buy the stake held by Erick Thohir, who owns 78 percent of the team’s operating rights. Per the Washington Post’s Steven Goff, Thohir has been seeking to divest for more than a year.

It values the club at $500 million.

If that figure is accurate it just became a lot harder for the #savethecrew folks to put together an investment group with enough cash to buy the team and keep it local.

That's almost certainly true, but it is worth noting that some of that $500 million - maybe even most of it - reflects a brand spanking new stadium. DCU does not own the stadium, but it has a 30-year lease at $1 per year. By contrast, the Crew own their stadium, but it is not well built or well located and seems to have zero value to the franchise.

If you are pricing out buying the Crew, you are probably paying the price of a new franchise in Austin - taking into account there is not yet a local stadium there.

Also location of the Stadium. A downtown DC Stadium costs more than a downtown Columbus (is it downtown, or outside of city?). Or ever downtown Austin. Why valuation of NYCFC with a NYC stadium would be through the roof.
