I get it and need to consider how to reflect goal differential without making things too complicated.

As it stands, it's the sum of differences in the two scores. With a 4-3 result, 4-1 is 2 goals' difference; second place was 3-1 (3 goals); third was a tie between 3-0 and 2-1 (each 4 goals). I suppose that rewards picking high or low scoring over getting the goal differential correct. Open to ideas.
