[Debunked] Strange Rumor from Reddit: CFG Open to Buying Cosmos Brand?

In a thread on Reddit, there are two users claiming that CFG is seriously considering purchasing and using the Cosmos branding in the event the NASL folds in the near future:

One user has Red Bull flair, so there's always the possibility of simple trolling. But I thought I'd bring it up here because a handful of you are in the know.

It just seems so ridiculous to me right now, I have to believe it's pure bullshit. Thoughts?

Perhaps they're thinking of turning them into NYCFC II, except they'd have all the benefits of a team that already exists so they wouldn't have to start from scratch. And that way if the league folds the team could keep going. Assuming there's any truth to this, of course.

If CFG were to buy the Cosmos and move then to USL to make them in effect NYCFC II (but keep the Cosmos brand), CFG would lose the Cosmos name and rights that the current owners have over the club which is their name source of revenue through marketing and merchandise rights.

But if CFG were to buy the Cosmos, with that name and legacy, why would they want to put them in the 2nd tier division of the league to be a feeder to NYCFC and the rest of the CFG family of clubs?
 
Just for the record, the rumor is clear that the Cosmos brand would be used in place of the City brand for the first team.

I'm not crazy, right? This has to be bullshit? I mean, I could maybe get behind it if it happens, but they've spent a lot of time and money on the City brand and it's so important to CFG, I can't see them changing course. They have to have seen how little the Cosmos name moved the attendance needle here in the city.

Unless they have data indicating a huge benefit in merch sales and viewship internationally, and I mean huge.

Just read through the thread because of your post and no, you don't appear to be crazy. Can't imagine CFG dropping the City and replacing it with the Cosmos.

Forget videos.... all of our swag would be vintage. From a merchandising perspective they'd either piss off everybody that's loaded up already or they'd hit the trifecta bonanza of us schmucks hard-charging the store again to re-outfit ourselves.

I'd definitely be in the first group of lampard-gate level pissedness.

Why not buy the name, etc and just mothball it per Goodfella Goodfella, sell merch, throw up a "soccer in the city" museum in our new park, claim all of the original history, and so forth? Would be pretty good business probably.

That said, it's surely bullshit.

The simplest argument against use of the Cosmos branding for anything CFG-owned is that CFG seems pretty committed to every one of their teams being called _____ City.

I could see them maybe buying the Cosmos IP and sitting on it as a resellable asset when some other entity inevitably wants to resurrect the Cosmos again in a future league of some sort.

Dear intern, we are way past the point of this being a viable strategy for first team name replacement. I'd be totally fine with us doing this for our USL team, but I'd have to seriously reevaluate my commitment to the team if we rebranded the first team to the cosmos.

I like the brand we have and I really don't want to change it.
