Has Israel really been "very close" lately?
- In 2018 they finished 4th in their group. There were 5 other UEFA teams that didn't advance to the finals after finishing second in their group.
- In 2014 they finished 3rd in their group, but again, 5 other UEFA teams didn't advance after finishing 2nd in their groups. Other teams that finished 3rd include Serbia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and Slovakia. I can't remember the quality of all of those squads back in 2014, but they are usually decent
- In 2010, they finished 4th in their group, again 5 other UEFA teams didn't advance after finishing 2nd in their respective groups.
If the following article is to be trusted at all (
https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39448474), then UEFA would only grab 3 more spots. Based on the last three WC qualifying rounds, I don't see how Israel is close to qualifying.
I don't mean to pooh pooh Israel. And perhaps they have a lot of young talent and should be better in the next couple of cycles, I just don't see any evidence from previous UEFA WC qualifying to suggest that they should be in most WCs going forward.
